To be fair, things have changed greatly from that time. Specifically because of that case and the Kelly Michaels case.
Unfortunately, the same argument applies if the penalty for child rape is life in prison.

Most rapists were raped as children, and most people who beat children were beaten as children. I don’t know about child rapists.
The death penalty is always a bad idea.
Suggesting rape as a punishment makes you just as bad as a rapist.
Forced labour is hardly a good idea when unemployment is high an people could be paid to do that labour.
Forced labor is also very inefficient, and not very good for the peace of mind or character of those who are expected to do the forcing.
