Ok…let me just ask some simple questions.

First, did Warren Harding do anything to relieve the situation in 1921?
Second, was the crash of 1921 as severe as the crash of 1929?
Third, two years after the crash of 1921, what was the unemployment rate?
Fourth, two years four years, eight years after 1929 what was the unemployment rate?

> You are quite right! There was a crash in 1921 that was in some respects even more severe than the crash in 1929. But only two years later, full employment was reached. And Warren Harding did virtually NOTHING. Fast forward to 1929 and Hoover does everything in his power to prevent economic recession (read: economic correction). Then FDR comes along and does even MORE than Hoover and…you get the GREAT depression. Even wonder why the difference between the two? You can also see this in the way Reagan handled the depression of 1987(?)

I love how you go from stating that unemployment in the 1920s was zero, to stating that there was a severe economic crash in 1921 with high unemployment.

Your knowledge of the facts has changed, but your opinion hasn’t changed at all!

I can think of no better proof that your opinion wasn’t based on facts to begin with.

> Here’s an honest answer: it isn’t stupidity. It’s a psychological state called the “just world” mindset. People who are threatened by powerlessness want to believe that they’re in control of their lives, so when bad things happen to other people they pretend it was because of something bad that person did. Rape victim? Must have been something she was wearing. Can’t pay medical bills? Must not have saved enough. Lost their job? Should have sucked their boss off when he asked. Etc.

It seems to me that it is the left who is constantly seeking to shift the blame. Mercy…there are people who are still blaming Bush for the Obama economy. 🙂 Most cons support the death penalty for rape and murder. and it’s also quite clear that cons give far more $$ to charity than the left. Dick Cheney gave his entire salary to charity. So…I can’t agree with this.

Instead of you wasting our time throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks, why don’t you _first_ back up your claim in post #50?

I was hoping you would explain why the unemployment rate corrected so quickly in the 20s while in the 30s it never went down. I am patient. 🙂

Look at you, asking your little questions as though you weren’t completely ignorant before I corrected you.

Let me ask you a simple question: was the average long-run unemployment rate higher before or after the implementation of social security?

Well, as you have stated, the unemployment rate in the 1920s and earlier was zero.

Wait, we’re pretending you never said anything that profoundly stupid, right?

So let me ask you a simple question, was the unemployment rate ever higher for a longer period in American history than during the great depression?

Charity’s bullshit. Charity is people benefiting from a socio-economic system that creates and perpetuates poverty, squalor, drug addictions, broken homes and misery ; then turning around and throwing a little bit back at some palatable symptoms of those problems, some “deserving poor” to feel better about themselves (or worse, to better their public image).

If you believe giving to charity’s good enough, you’re part of the problem.

She’s getting housing help, food stamps and access to medical care. As a taxpayer I am damned grateful my elected government is using my tax dollars to make sure that a friend has a roof over her head, food in her refrigerator and access to medical treatment so she doesn’t leave two sweet kids motherless. Should she have to beg in the streets instead? Go plead with some idiot celibate priest or sexist rabbi so she doesn’t starve, freeze and die?

Exactly how miserable should her life be because some bad doctor thought her cancer was back pain and failed to get her treatment earlier?

:dubious:

Yeah, historically charity hasn’t been enough. I mean it’s nice and all, but things like social security were created because charity wasn’t sufficient to solve our problems. This is the kind of thing you learn in grade school history, unless you weren’t quite smart enough for grade school work. Makes you wonder if the right’s attempts to destroy the education system in this country wasn’t for the express purpose of creating more conservatives.

I would think it would be higher after SS. But I don’t recall ever disputing this point. My point is that the more the govt tries to fix the economy, the worse the economy gets. My evidence to support this is the unemployment rate of the 20s compared to that of the 30s.

No. It appears to me that the Great Depression rates were the highest sustained unemployment in US history.

Don’t just _ **think** _ about it, go check the facts. I mean, I’m not expecting you to change your opinion when you realize that everything you know is wrong; that’s something only intellectuals do. But at least you wouldn’t be arguing from a position of complete ignorance.
