Thanks. My first was [Thomas Midgley](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Midgley,_Jr.), chemist and king of unintended consequences - responsible for both leaded petrol and CFCs, he ultimately died when he became entangled in a system of pulleys he’d rigged to help him get in and out of bed while suffering limited mobility from polio. ---
