I THINK he said if the computer has the network as public the printer won’t work but if it has it as private it will. (Possibly I have this backward.) You might take a look at that. He only discovered it because one of our computers was one way and the other the other way and one worked and one didn’t.

> Wordy and confusing, but useful. I wonder if that’s my problem–I usually just end up carrying my laptop over to the printer and plugging it in long enough to print because I don’t want to screw around with figuring out why it’s not working wirelessly.

That might be our problem, too - we haven’t tried the network since it was public, I think. At this point we do the same thing - just carry the laptop over to the printer. 🙂

So far it hasn’t actually attacked me, but the threat is palpably there, and I feel it is only a matter of time. I’m thinking of starting to carry some sort of weapon to deal with it. Maybe a spray bottle with, what? Ammonia?

> Dog owners, you need to control your dogs! And teach them the limits of what they are supposed to “protect.” How you do that I don’t know, but people should not have to fear being bitten when all they are doing is walking down a PUBLIC SIDEWALK.

There is a dog in my neighbourhood that does the same thing - waits until we’re right next to his yard on the sidewalk, then comes charging at us like he’s going to kill us. I have recently looked at our local dog bylaws again, and it turns out that even though the dog is in his own yard, terrorizing people on the sidewalk is not allowed - could you look at your local dog laws and see if they say anything about that? If the law is on your side, I’d call it in every time he does it - sooner or later the owners will get tired of explaining to bylaw people why their dog is being allowed to break the law repeatedly.

If the dog isn’t behind a fence, I’d call that shit in instantly. I have problems with off-leash dogs in my neighbourhood, so I always walk with my [dog pepper spray](http://www.sabrered.com/servlet/the-template/SABREDogAttackDeterrentPepperSpray/Page), and I’ve called in off-leash dogs many, many times.

> **Helena330** - Has your g’ma said why she isn’t eating? Is it a “I hate the food” or a control thing? I ask, as my g’ma, when first put into a nursing home, refused to eat since it was the one thing she could still control. She was NOT happy about having to leave her home, but she had mental and medical issues that prevented home care. The nursing home _should_ have a social worker - try talking to him/her. If that fails and the place truly is a pit, contact your state ombudman for elder issues.

Thanks for the support, everyone. I’m doing a little better dealing with everything today.

MissTake, it doesn’t seem to be a control issue with her-it really is physical. She wants to eat, and she says she isn’t nauseated when food isn’t around, but bring food near her face and I can see she’s trying not to dry heave. When she does put some in her mouth, she says nothing tastes right, it’s all off.

I spoke with the doctors and nurses at the hospital almost daily (it felt like I was in a cartoon, I had to explain it to different people every day) and the last doctor supposedly gave her some medication. Either she didn’t get it or it didn’t work, so I guess I’ll be back to daily discussions. She’s ok with drinking water and orange juice, and is able to stay hydrated. We tried Ensure at she reacted just like with food.

The nursing home was better yesterday. Her first day there was Sunday and it must’ve been shorter-staffed and I got a pretty bad impression. Will definitely keep an eye on things.

Her mental state is pretty good considering her situation. If we could only get her feeling well enough to eat so her quality-of-life is better.

Thanks again.

Got a call from the manager today. Had to let it go to voicemail because I was on a work call. Manager says her Assistant Manager left, so they have cut back the hours to only being open until 6pm on Mondays, 5pm the rest of the week.

I suppose that’s really fucking convenient for the residents of the 160-200 apartments in this complex. Are we supposed to stay home from work or come home early if we need to pick up packages or conduct business with them?

And how about prospective tenants? “Gee honey, I’d like to check out that complex, but their office is never open when we can get there!”

Sweet resting Jesus, what kind of dill-holes run a public facing business by only being available when your customers are not?

At this point, I would just give permission to open my apartment for the manager to put the packages inside. But, I’ve never had apartment management I didn’t trust to do that.

I have to specifically call them and ask them to do it. Otherwise the packages will sit there and rot for all eternity.

I suppose I should be grateful they at least put them in the closet in the office now. they used to just pile them up in a corner, where anyone walking by could slip in and grab one while they were in the back making coffee.

> We had our gas meter replaced last weekend; the guy came in and checked over our water meter and furnace, told us that our furnace had a fan belt that was badly cracked, and that our furnace is in really great shape. This was all done in about half an hour, in the coldest day of the year so far (it was -27ºC/-16ºF that day). They really shouldn’t be screwing around with your heat in the cold - that’s not acceptable.

Well, the inspector did show up at 2:55. Then didn’t pass the work. He said the fuel line was not hooked back up to the furnace and hot water tank. I called my home services folks and talked to a supervisor. He says you can’t hook up the fuel line until after the inspection. Jesus Christ. He’s coming in the morning to check things out. Meanwhile, I still have no central heat or hot water and now, once this gets straightened out, I’ll have to wait another 8-3 day for the inspector to come back. Did I mention I’ve missed two days of work already? And the temps are not rising anytime soon? I am truly in repair hell. ☹

In her message, the apartment complex manager rather snottily claimed I had only one package in the office (I had said I had 3-4).

So when I get home, anyone want to guess how many packages I had waiting inside my door?

There’s a dog in my neighborhood who has a similar reaction while being walked on a leash. My mom was nearly attacked by it a few months ago when a neighbor’s child, who was walking the dog at the time, nearly lost her grip on the leash. Mom walks with a baseball bat now. When people stop to ask her why she walks with the bat, she doesn’t hesitate to tell the story. People either respond with “Oh yeah…_that_ dog” or “Oh, that doggy wouldn’t hurt anyone!” Of course, the dog’s owner sees nothing wrong her her pwecious widdle pup’s behavior. The dog spends a good deal of time in its backyard, where it is contained (hopefully) by an invisible fence.

Gadzooks! I thought it was bad that we just learned that there’s a hole in the firebox of the furnace at the “new” house! But we haven’t moved in yet, and apparently it’s a simple repair. Plus there’s a fireplace if necessary. Good luck getting warm!

Anti-rant: after firing yet another contractor for being too flaky to actually show up and accept cash in return for working, we struck gold. Ran into an old school chum at the gas station, learned that he is a contractor specializing in the major stuff we need done, called Monday when we decided we couldn’t count on the Flake. Ben met us at the house Monday night, called with an estimate Tuesday morning, and he and his guys have already laid more than 50% of the floors, solved a problem in the kitchen, moved the two outlets that needed to move, replaced a breaker, etc. I love these guys.

I hate that response from owner’s, when their dog is coming at me - “Oh, he won’t hurt you!” Yeah, you’re fucking right he won’t - he’ll get a snootful of spray and my boot up his ass. I’d really prefer it if you CONTROLLED YOUR DOG like the law requires, though.

It’s not a question of fault, it’s not a dog’s fault that it was abused and became aggressive toward other dogs. But it’s a question of the most efficient resource allocation. I’d rather use that time and those funds to rehome 5 nice dogs than 1 aggressive dog.

**(((Helena330)))** I have no advice, but I do have a lot of sympathy. I hope things get better.

I’ve seen people carrying golf clubs because of dogs. While I understand their fear, I’ve always thought that carrying pepper spray would be easier and faster.

I actually logged in to give a PSA to cat slaves. If your cats love to play with [Da Bird](http://www.go-cat.com/), and I’ve never met a cat who doesn’t like it…be sure that when you pull the wand up to make kitteh jump that the sharpies are pointed away from you.

This toy has a 3 foot flexible wand, then 3 feet of string and then a feather lure. Its the string that is the problem. When snapping it to allow your feline masters to leap into the air after the lure, you really do need to pay attention to where the lure will swing. Its really best that you do NOT do the jump snap thing when kitteh is running towards you.

Cats are amazing critters, one of the things they can do is do a running leap teats high for a human female while chasing a fake bird in the house. If they just happen to land on said idiot female who got distracted, well, she’s just something to bounce off in the chase.

tl/dr I was playing with a cat and it jumped after a toy and landed with 20 claws out on my poor boobs.

Bill was so upset about the blood on me that he fed the cats into comas and then held them all down so I could trim their claws. Take that stupid cats! (all except Steve. we don’t have enough treats to put him into a coma, and we don’t have enough cream sherry to make me stupid enough to try it.)
