My favorite cake is devil’s food cake with chocolate icing. Not homemade, not from a bakery, not some fancy g’nosh. I prefer Duncan Hines box mix, the kind my mom made me for my birthday as a kid.

My wife, who is a great cook, while she cannot understand my preference, makes it for my birthday every year.

A-1 Sauce improves virtually any steak.

Arby’s Beef and Cheddar with lots of Arby’s Sauce? Yum.

Lima beans must be served very mushy and swimming in butter.

Cold pizza is better than hot.

Any brownie is better with a dollop of Smucker’s raspberry jam on it.

Agreed. Better still with some stadium brown mustard, too.

Heathen! I far prefer Miracle Whip to mayonnaise. Mayonnaise always has a bitter aftertaste to me.

I like kids’ sugary cereals, too, but… not _that_ much.

I can’t stand miracle whip but my wife prefers it. I think it really breaks down to what your mother served you as a child.

There’s a hot dog joint in Chicago that DOES NOT ALLOW ketchup in their restaurant, at all. I’m sure there are many more like it.

If you ask for ketchup, you’ll be laughed out of the store. Personally, I like ketchup on my hot dog but I NEED ketchup for french fries. I ordered my meal and promptly walked over to the neighboring convenience store to buy a bottle of ketchup. On the way, I saw another couple eating their hot dogs in their car, with a bottle of ketchup sitting on their dashboard 😃

thanks to the now defunct park view jr high cafeteria (and there numerous health code violations) I put bbq sauce over almost everything like they used spices to cover things up in the dark ages …if that frozen premade nothing natural on it burger looks slightly green? put sauce on it and ill eat it … half burned/frozen fries? just sauce it …for 3 years I ate the alleged bbq pork patty because anything else was disgusting rancid or frozen … you couldn’t even eat the ketchup because it was frozen and 1-5 years old

I even prefer bbq chicken pizza to anything else now …

Yep.

I dip my fries into 1000 island dressing, and that’s the only condiment I like on my cheeseburgers. (Ok, if it is a real steakburger, A1 can work).

Pizza? Give me really good brick oven hand made- or cheapo Totinos party “pizza”.

You’re probably thinking of Gene and Jude’s in River Grove (technically, not Chicago, but close enough.) But you might also be thinking of Jimmy’s Red Hots, which is in Chicago. Neither have ketchup on their premises.

Definitely Gene and Jude’s… and their hot dogs were really quite good despite needing to provide my own ketchup 🙂

> In the US, it’s most commonly found as the flavor enhancer Accent. If you’re lucky, I find it simply as MSG in the generic/store spice aisle and it’s like a quarter or less of the price of Accent. It tastes, I dunno how to describe it exactly. Meaty, savory, satisfying, “full”? Bit of salty but not really salt. Parmesan cheese without the cheesy flavor? Once you taste it, you’ll recognize the flavor.

So umami-ey, I guess. I’ll have to check it out, although a whole pound would probably be overkill.

For someone as knowledgeable about beer as I try to be, I still very much enjoy cheap, light American and Mexican lagers. Think Corona, Modelo Especial, PBR, Budweiser, etc…

I also don’t have an issue with MSG, and often add it to meat-based dishes, garnering comments of “Ohhh! It was soooo yummy!” when we give food to other people (my wife tends to take dishes to friiends who have just had a baby). I haven’t fessed up that I dose it with MSG, and that’s probably why it’s “sooo yummy” instead of “pretty good”.

I don’t know, but I do know it gives me a serious headache, so there is that.

I despise dijon mustard, or at least that stuff sold here in Murika proporting to be dijon mustard.
I also don’t eat mustard on my pastrami, corned beef, or anything else except hot dogs, and sometimes not even then. And I prefer brown mustard with the seeds in it. none of this neon yellow stuff!

Regardless of what certain self-important chefs on the food network say, ‘seared tuna’ is raw fish, and it tastes like raw fish. 😛 I’ve eaten it, once, and will not do so again.

I like spicy food but I don’t like hot food. I’m not gonna sear my taste buds trying to impress anyone with how macho I am, especially 'cause I’m not.

More later, maybe.

My confession - though I do not regard this as a sin, far from it - is Marmite. On crumpets. Or anything toasted and buttery.

Yes. I had assumed you wouldn’t recognize that word since you were asking what MSG tastes like. But since you do, it’s pure umami, as the umami taste receptors detect glutamates.

People will give anecdotes to the contrary, but studies have failed to turn up a link between MSG and any adverse effects.
