[Tiday I’ve learned NEVER to argue](http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=5&u=/ap/20041122/ap_on_re_us/hunters_shot) with an armed guy in the woods over where to wait to kill Bambi. The party that got shot up has its own type of insanity. They’re gonna continue the hunt. Jeez, these people are SERIOUS. You’d think their families would starve if the hunt failed and they couldn’t bring home meat for the winter. ---

The shooter was a whacko, yes. But the hunter quoted as saying that they weren’t going home yet was from a separate party of 20 who were hunting two miles away and were not involved in the incident. ---

Michigan has a huge, and I mean HUGE, deer hunting populace. (Its refered to here by a few as " High Holy Days") Usually any deaths related to hunting are the older guys who bag a deer and then try to drag it back to camp. Die of a heart attack. Or the accidently rifle accident, which is fairly rare. I’ve never heard of a deer hunting murder like this. It is insane. ---

From the paper: “deer gun hunting season” So… what kind of call do you use to attract deer guns? Or am I misreading it, and it’s the season when deer go out to hunt for guns? Yes, I understand, it’s to differentiate from bow hunting or other types of deer hunting ---

My impression was that they sit around and get drunk and argue with each other till a deer staggers by, and then they shoot it and anything nearby. . ---

I’m not sure if you are serious or not, but deer hunting usually involves getting up at 3am, getting to your deer stand before the sun comes up and being very still and very quite for a very long time; waiting on a deer to stagger by. Deer hunting = boring. ---

In MI we have an archer season, then a firearm season, then later a muzzleloader season, then the archers get another crack. The regular firearm season draws the most hunters and goes from Nov 15-30. I rather doubt the length of season adds to the craziness. This was a nutcase. ---

To echo what **Bruce Daddy** said, deer hunting is nothing of the sort. It’s getting up and putting on your 20 lbs of clothing long before the sun rises so that you can be in the freezing cold woods while it’s still dark and then stand quietly and patiently in your place making as little noise as possible so as not to disturb the animals. Then you stand there until it gets dark again (if you don’t see a deer you can take a killing shot on) before finally schlepping your tired, frozen self out of the woods. Some of the deer stands may involve walking a mile or more over uneven terrain through snow while carrying your rifle and other gear. If you do happen to kill a deer, there is the exhausting effort to drag it (hopefully down the mountain) to your car. Most of the time, it’s boring as hell to stand there all day and see no deer. Sometimes, you get really lucky and see your deer early on the first day. It’s not unheard of to go the entire season without getting a deer. > [@](#): > > **BobLibDem** said: > This was a nutcase. I’ve lived in Texas all my life, and I will tell you that Texans are as nutty as Michiganders when it comes to hunting… be it deer, quail, or anything else. The worst I ever heard of was a guy who tried to off one of his relatives by making it look like a hunting accident. Premeditated, cold-blooded, sure, but not wacko. And you’d be surprised how few hunting “accidents” actually happen. People running around in the bushes with guns are surprisingly careful, apparently. Actually, now that I think about it, back in my hunting days, I wouldn’t have terminated my hunting trip just because the cops had caught an armed wacko two miles away. I’d have done what the interviewee did – round up and count my buddies, and then go back to what I’d been doing. Of course, back then, what we were doing was _drinking_, not actually _hunting_… ---
