Using Edge on Win10 with SD light theme we have a new glitch. New as of this afternoon May 9 2025.

Across the top of every topic listing page (New, Unread, Latest, each category listing, etc.) when fully scrolled upwards there is the big blue banner with the yellow “The Straight Dope Message Board” graphic heading, then the “The Straight Dope” in ordinary slightly larger-than-normal type, then justified off to the right is the search magnifying glass, the hamburger menu, and the user’s icon. That part is unchanged. So far so good. But …

Just below that area within the area where the scrollable body content of the page goes is the “Fighting ignorance…” tagline in plain text anchored just below the bottom of the big blue banner. There’s 0 pixels of gap, so the topmost pixels of the tagline are lost against the banner. And it’s locked there so all the body text of the page scrolls under the tagline and the two types of content pile up destructively.

The same situation exists on a topic / thread display page. Except …
If you scroll down \>~1 inch the blue title bar changes to display the thread title and category instead. At which point the spurious tagline disappears.

ETA: a complete cache clear, logout, etc., did not cure the problem.

Time for somebody to go back and tweak it again to be right.

Seeing the same thing on Firefox/Linux, BTW.

I usually run SD Dark theme (Win 11, Firefox 128.10.0esr). I don’t observe this effect.

When I switch to SD Light theme, I do see what’s been described, and also the other reported issue that avatar changes from a square to a circle.

It’s something about the SD Light theme that doesn’t seem to affect SD Dark. (At least, in my case.)

Also (and this is extremely minor), but the numeric indicator for unread message is now a purple/blue rather than yellow. Not really a fan.

Is this an effect of the same update that [roundified the avatars](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/avatar-shape-theme-dependent/1018172)?

It took me awhile to notice this because it didn’t affect my avatar at all.

🤣

As to the original subject, I don’t see it in Edge on W11, and I have SD Light.

ETA: Never mind, I cleared cache and see the issue now too.

My speculation is there was one update released which created both changes. The changes are unrelated except for being in the same release. IOW no cause/effect between them.

Just a hypothesis, in case it helps…

It looks like the generated “SD light theme” CSS at [https://sea3.discourse-cdn.com/straightdope/stylesheets/desktop\_theme\_15\_c2be2adfc9b9eefa0ac79b1f4d36de9cf5f05692.css](https://sea3.discourse-cdn.com/straightdope/stylesheets/desktop_theme_15_c2be2adfc9b9eefa0ac79b1f4d36de9cf5f05692.css) is broken due to an SCSS compiler error. (The generated [dark theme CSS](https://sea3.discourse-cdn.com/straightdope/stylesheets/desktop_theme_16_0e1903cf8ce05163aaca6d9f0a019480b9fbde9f.css?__ws=boards.straightdope.com) still works.)

Putting a few things together, it looks like:

- Line 42’s `background: color.adjust($quaternary, $lightness: -10%);` seems to require an explicit module import of `@use 'sass:color';`
- This used to be implicitly available, [but not after Dart Sass 1.79.0](https://sass-lang.com/documentation/breaking-changes/import/), and Discourse [recently upgraded their SASS and disabled the deprecation warning because it was too noisy](https://github.com/discourse/discourse/commit/3e22fc8ba20b4a9747ead510f022f268f7635e96#diff-869351884fe778ff171595f8fcaeee6da1aa28cfbc161e189708a5e8936e5b09). This probably killed our custom theme.
- The fix for our custom theme is to either explicitly import that module (if possible) or rewrite it in more recent SCSS styling for Discourse, e.g. [Use Discourse Core Variables in your Theme - Developer Guides - Discourse Meta](https://meta.discourse.org/t/use-discourse-core-variables-in-your-theme/77551) and [Update themes and plugins to support automatic dark mode - Developer Guides - Discourse Meta](https://meta.discourse.org/t/update-themes-and-plugins-to-support-automatic-dark-mode/161595).
- Maybe something like `background-color: var(--quaternary); filter: brightness(90%);` would work?
- Since we’re a hosted customer, Discourse (or rather the company behind them) might be willing to help at [Discourse moved to Dart Sass - Announcements - Discourse Meta](https://meta.discourse.org/t/discourse-moved-to-dart-sass/254461)

If you replace that broken autogenerated CSS with an [older version from last month](https://web.archive.org/web/20250415002745/https://sea3.discourse-cdn.com/straightdope/stylesheets/desktop_theme_15_0d3a4dad964a0a3642276f5ad2fff422857627be.css), the theme works again

Crossreferencing a post of mine in the other current themes-having-problems thread:

> I found I really did not like SD Dark. Waay too contrasty and eye-strainy. So I switched to Discourse Classic. It looks very little like vBulletin used to. But now 5 years after the switch to Discourse, I really don’t care what vBulletin looked like. When I visit other vBulletin-based boards I find the look & feel positively antiquated. My expectation is that Discourse Classic is used throughout Discourse, not just here in our trivial corner of their vast universe. As such it’ll be a) stabl…
