People spell by how words sound. How is that so difficult to understand?
Tell that to “women.” Nobody spells it “wimen,” which is how it sounds.

I’m a pretty good speller. Actually, I’m a damn good speller. And I spell entirely by phonetics. “Definitely” and “definately” would have two distinctly different pronounciations to my ear.
Doesn’t always work. “Beauty” used to always throw me, for example And you know that word for when an organization, especially a government organization, becomes so huge and rule-laden that it can no longer function effectively? Also sounds like an item of furniture? I can never spell that word, not even close. To the extent that I will go to ridiculous lengths to avoid having to even the attempt.

It might have a better chance of working if a reform of English orthography were instituted across the English-speaking world. However, the Wikipedia article offers little encouragement for such a plan:

One of the tenants i live by is that one should always use correct grammer and spelling.
