# Define "Politically Correct" + Give 2 examples in your life worth raging at

And yet, something like 60% of Americans think racism is a problem. If we are to take popular opinion at face value, one would think that people tut-tutting at terms like “Chinaman” is a far bigger problem than four hundred years of systematic oppression of non-white Christians.

So you’ve touched on something that I find extremely puzzling. It is quite common for critics of PC to announce how offensive they could be if they wanted to. You yourself made a reference to how many creative insults you are capable of coming up with. Others may wear t-shirts that say “Fuck political correctness!” or similar things just for the sake of being offensive.

What, in your view, gives you standing to criticize others as being obnoxious or assholes - in the context of urging them to drop that behavior - while you simultaneously take some degree of pride in being obnoxious yourself? Do you not see the irony here? Or, upon reflection, is this behavior just another example of, “I am firm and principled; you are stubborn and pigheaded!”

OK, here’s a real life example for you.

I was in a meeting with my department and we were chatting about the instructors we use for our video courses. Some of them are old and sound like they had a stroke recently. Some of them have their own unique fashion sense. I was talking about one really technical course, and how this one instructor knew the material in and out, but she was one of those people who could tie you up for hours telling you all the minute details. I added “I think she’s a lesbian, because she looks really man-like.”

The boss called me in to tell me one of my co-workers is a lesbian, and to please watch any comments like that in the future. I said OK, sorry, didn’t mean to ruffle any feathers. That was it. Life went on after that. I didn’t feel like my rights to free expression were suppressed. It was just a reminder to use common courtesy. I’m sure \*\*octopus \*\*will see it differently, but there’s my real life encounter with the PC police.

You didn’t violate any secret PC code; you violated professional decency. Her sexual orientation is none of your business, and it had nothing to do with her abilities. Attributing her verbosity to lesbianism is just plain weird.

I’m glad you were able to move on, but I hope you’ll keep your judgments in the future to whether or not a person is a good choice to speak on video. End of story.

Sure. And I wouldn’t call complaining about Trump constantly lying “political correctness” either, buuuuut… Look, reasonable people can mostly look at something like this and say, “That’s not political correctness”, but I think that’s not fair. “Political correctness”, insofar as it has any definition, is a right-wing snarl word. And this is _absolutely_ the kind of shit certain right-wing fucks would be _apoplectic_ about. C’mon - you can’t imagine someone like Rush Limbaugh hosting an angry rant on his show about how you “can’t even make harmless jokes any more without pissing off the PC police at the workplace”? I can, _easily_. This is definitely an example of “political correctness”. It’s just a little more obvious than usual that what the “PC police” are complaining about is entirely reasonable and something people shouldn’t have to deal with.

The OP wanted a real-life example of the PC Police in action, and that’s the closest example I had. You quibbling about rhetoric and PC-shaming me is a better real-life example. Thanks. :rolleyes:

I disagree. I think is exactly what the OP is looking for, except that **Knowed Out** is not raging about it. And, kudos to **Knowed Out** for accepting the correction and moving on with life.

I really wish the OP would return and see if we’re on the right track.

WTF? This seems to be right what the doctor ordered for this thread. **Knowed Out** learned something and moved on. Professional decency standards really have changed over the years and sometimes one needs to catch up. Your first paragraph was really uncalled for, IMO.

I agree that stealing recipes isn’t honorable, but cultural appropriation isn’t as much of an issue unless that culture finds it offensive.

In Portland, had people had problem with the theft, and not reacted in a way that they were “saving” Hispanics from this issue despite no calls for outrage from that community is the problem. Assuming that some minority group _may find_ something offensive, but deciding that for them is a larger problem. The non-local totem poles in Seattle are a better example. Portland is trying but they have a long history of racism even deeper than in the south and are making mistakes while trying to improve. But this was easy for people to be outraged on social media, ignoring the very real problems in the area and it fit Fox New’s _“we are the victims narrative”_

While, the GOP does have a higher percentage due to the Southern Strategy, and the power shift from the Teaparty and alt-right racists, Oregon is one of the lest racially tolerant areas of the country despite the Republicans trying to use it as a “hey Democrats suck too”

As most examples on this thread have demonstrated, most of the anti-PC rhetoric is because people think they should still be able to call people are “fags” or some other stupid stereotypes at work or when serving the public.  
But _Mission Style_ burritos are actually far more American than even apple pie.

Fair enough. As an example of something that ‘right-wing fucks’ would cry PC about, it’s spot on.

But that seems kind of degrading to Knowed Out, whose political persuasion I don’t know. I just thought I would let him/her know that wasn’t really a result of PC police, just, to me, a good office manners uh…police.

Of course, I’m not a right-wing fuck so I don’t know what THEY think PC police do 🙂

You’re right, of course. But the OP asked how people’s lives had been disrupted by political correctness; **manson1972** and I are pointing out that the example supplied by **Knowed Out** doesn’t qualify.

What would qualify? I suppose if someone were fired for saying “stewardess” instead of “flight attendant,” or some such thing.

But the fact that **no one** has supplied even one valid example leads me to conclude the whole crusade against PC is complete right wing bullshit.

Yes, I’m glad he learned and moved on. And it was a good example of how professional standards have evolved. I’ve been in the business world since the late 80’s, and I can remember when talk like this wouldn’t cause anyone to bat an eye.

My point was that it really wasn’t OK then, and standards evolving is a good thing. It doesn’t have anything to do with the whole PC label. It’s a standard of decency and respect that should have been in place all along.

It is more about trying to more perfectly implement a system developed by imperfect founding fathers.

_We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness._

Which is counter to the desires of those who are anti-PC which wish to maintain a society where equality at birth is not a core value.

It seems that it’s the snowflakes on the “right” that keep bringing up “PC”. Apparently they don’t like the idea that they might have to mind their manners.

_But if anyone gives them any shit, they get the vapors._

So, to hell with all so called PC. Let 'er rip. They want to play in the mud, so let’s join them. If they can’t take what they dish out, too bad.
