Defining the "oldies." Has the time span for music becoming oldies increased?

Most cities still have a generic classic rock station. Typically 70’s Zeppelin, Stones, CCR, steve miller, journey, etc. Mostly the same songs that they called classic rock in the 90s, though its expanded to include 80s rock from bands that started in the 70s like Van Halen, ACDC, Aerosmith, and even 90s music like Black Crows, because their music sounds like classic rock. So its more about sound than a specific time period.

“Modern Rock” stations still play a lot of 25 year old music like nirvana, alice in chains, greenday, soundgarden, mixed in with contemporary releases like…all these bands of today who i dont know their names…because it all generally sounds like “modern rock”

I define the “oldies” as anything that was heard on American Bandstand between the time show first aired, and the time that young men on the dance floor were no longer required to wear ties.

And I further define that music as “oldies,” when it was first recorded.

(INTERVIEWER: So, Mr. Holly, what genre do you place Peggy Sue in?

BUDDY HOLLY: Same genre as all of my music. It’s “oldies.”)

The Beatles will never be “oldies,” no matter how old the Lennon-McCartney songs get.
