Related [thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=421666) with more examples. I also remember a fascinating thread a while ago about ghost roads; roads that are no longer used, that end in nothing. But I can’t find it any more.

Whether she really went there alone is disputed - here’s [one part](http://www.uer.ca/forum_showthread_archive.asp?threadid=8951) of another point of view. (Not that this detracts from the fascinating photos on her site.)
