I saw the original, thanks to dollar store DVDs, and it had more holes in it than…something very holy indeed.

So, you want to lose the backstory romance between Aragorn and Arwen? Or do you imagine another way to preserve that aspect of Tolkein’s story?

I agree 100% on the whole Aragorn-falling-off-the-cliff diversion. That and the [non-special edition] near betrayal by Faramir were the only two points in the whole trilogy of movies that made me want to pop out of my seat in outrage. IMO, the special edition at least made Faramir’s motivations clearer, and removed the suspicion that it was the influence of the Ring that made him drag Frodo et. al. to Gondor. I still felt that Faramir was a far weaker character in the movies than in the books.

I disagree that _L.A. Confidential_ should have eliminated the last scene. Vincennes is the sacrificial lamb, Ed is our upright hero, Bud is our prodigal son. His redemption is necessary to complete the righteous resolution of the story.

For me, I say rework the ending of _American Beauty_ so it isn’t so clear who is responsible for the shooting. Everyone involved in the last scene, with the exception of Angela, had a motive. It should’ve been left to the imagination of the viewers.

**Full Metal Jacket** - change the climax to the one in the book… the sniper picks off several of the marines, but instead of killing them outright, continues to shoot off pieces of their bodies, luring out other marines to the same fate. Joker ends up having to kill Cowboy in order to put him out of his misery.

Ha. I was thinking the same thing. I remember the battle scene as being the first one. I completely forgot that anything happened before that.

As already mentioned with _League Of Their Own_, I think _Schindler’s_ List and _Malcolm X_ had the same problem. It seems like producers feel compelled to overdo the contextual ending scenes, I guess out of a desire to make the film seem even more “epoch”.

In Titanic, when the Titanic is rubbing against the iceberg and chunks of ice are falling onto the deck they should have had an eskimo fall to the deck, jump up and exclaim joyfully “I’m saved!!”.

Well, I guess he’d have to say it in eskimo and have subtitles.
