Never ones to shy away from snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, the Dems have selected Denver to be the site of the 2008 convention. Now, I’ve nothing against Denver. It’s a lovely city, and I’d think that _any_ other time that it’d be a fine city to hold a convention, but **not** in 2008. No, the '08 convention needs to be in New Orleans (or as close to it as humanly possible).

New Orleans needs the money the convention would bring to the city, but more importantly, _it needs the attention the convention would bring it!_ Too many people don’t know that the place is _still fucked up_ from the hurricane and Mike “heckuva job Brownie”'s FEMA efforts. Putting the convention there would remind Americans of the mess that this Administration has brought to America, not only overseas, but also here at home. The press would be filling all kinds of airtime both during the run up to the convention as well as while the convention was going on, showing people the city (or what’s left of it).

And while the Dems aren’t running _against_ this Administration, it wouldn’t be too hard for them to make the connection that another Republican president would simply bring us more of the same (at least until the Democratic president had a chance to fuck things up). Oh, sure, it might be considered hypocritical to hold the convention there after the Dems blasted the Republicans for holding the '04 convention in NYC, but there’s a _big fucking difference in the two situations, I’d say!_

NYC got screwed _twice_, once by the terrorists, then by the government that failed to meet it’s promises to the city. When Katrina happened, the Dems controlled neither the White House, nor Congress, so it’s not like they had much say over how the Federal government responded to the disaster.

Of course, the Republicans missed the chance to show they were going to make amends for this Administration by picking [Minnesota](http://www.nytimes.com/cq/2006/09/27/cq_1515.html) for their convention site (Isn’t that Walter Mondale’s home state?). Had _they_ gone to New Orleans, they could do a “mistakes were made” speech, while showing that they were going to be different than before by coming to New Orleans (Hey, it worked in '04!), but I guess that’s too easy for them or something.

Bend over, America, and lube yourself up, because it looks like the '08 Presidential campaign is going to be filled with both sides calling the other “sheep pimps,” rather than one party simply putting a stake through the heart of the other one.

Don’t you think many people, if either party chose N.O., would criticize them for attempting to appeal to emotions?

Uhm, Bush isn’t running in '08.

And isn’t the convention usually held during hurricane season? Maybe they want to make sure they actually have a convention.

If New Orleans is still that fucked up from Katrina, it might not be capable of hosting the convention. Probably a better idea to let the people actually in New Orleans focus on rebuilding, and beat the drum of Republican malfeasance/incompetence from another city.

Also, they want to make sure that everything can be prepared in time – it wouldn’t be a terrific impression if the convention were held in New Orleans and the setup went up the creek.

As for the hurricane season issue, the odds are pretty slim that they’d be there when a hurricane hit (plenty of companies schedule their conventions for hurricane prone areas during that time of the year). If one _were_ to show up so that they _couldn’t_ hold their convention there at that time, they could always reschedule for the following week or so, or have a back up city planned thats still in the region but statistically unlikely to be whacked by the same storm. Finally, if there was a hurricane that hit either before or at around the same time of the convention and FEMA blew it again, that’s just _more_ ammo for the Dems to use.

**Miller** , that’s why I said, “or as close as humanly possible” since N.O. might not be able to handle the added hassle, but another city in the region might.

The National Association of Widgets doesn’t get prime time tv coverage. You can’t just reschedule a major political convention. Plus, there will be three weeks of 2008 Olympics during that time. The schedule has to be Dem convention, 3 weeks of Olympics, Rep convention, Labor Day, and then the beginning of the fall season.

Like which city? A political convention is a huuuuuge event, and not that many cities have the facilities to host one that size. Perhaps Houston and Dallas can, but I certainly have my doubts about Shreveport or Baton Rouge being able to handle such a thing.

How much good would it do N.O. to have a convention in Dallas?

It’s in Denver because Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada are the key swing states in '08.

In addition to not having the capacity to handle the convention, all the news shows would be doing stories on the destruction, and not focus on the Dems themselves. Putting it somewhere “in the region” makes no sense at all. That particular part of the south is the reddest part of the red states.

What about Mississippi? They got whacked by Katrina as well. Still close enough to draw easy attention to New Orleans.

**John Mace** , you totally lost me with your comment.

**dalej42** , I realize I’m in the minority here, but screw the Olympics. Besides, even holding the convention in Denver doesn’t eliminate the possibility that it could be preempted by coverage of a natural disaster or other big news event, like say, North Korea attacking South Korea, or really bad shit starts happening in Iraq. A quake wipes out LA, for example, if _either_ party continues with their convention going full blast, they’re going to be considered to operating in bad taste to say the least.

**Lamar Mundane** , NYC was the bluest of the blue states in '04, but the Republicans went there anyway.

Indeed. Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi each had at least a 15-point split in 2004; in addition, two of the three governors are Republican, with Blanco facing a tough reelection, five of the six Senators are Republican, with Landrieu also facing a very tough reelection in '08, and 15-26 D-R House members in that area.

Exactly where in Mississippi are you planning on finding the facilities for a convention of that size?

The Olympics take precedence over any doings at a political convention. Everything except the vice presidental choice is decided way in advance, anyway. Boring speeches by boring people pandering to the lowest common denominator of their party. Same old same old.

Besides, NO needs to focus on its own problems, not catering to a bunch of leeches.

Ever hear of September 11? The event Bush has been whoring for 6 years. Without Sept. 11, the 2004 Rep. convention would have been in Dallas.
