> Washington, D.C.: I know y’all are busy trying to squeeze in free massages and buffets between convention events, but why hasn’t there been any press about Dennis Hastert alleging on Fox News that George Soros’s funding comes from drug cartels?
>
> Gwen Ifill: No free massags here. Don’t believe everything you read. There are thousands of reporters here, and I bet most of them (like) me are spending a lot more time chasing the story than chasing the pedicures (although I could really use one right now.)
> I did read about the curious Hastert comment. Part of the reason you may not have heard more is that the speaker of the house has made himself curiously inaccessible during this convention. And the organizers scheduled his speech at noon Monday – not exactly prime time.

“Don’t believe everything you read??” _It was on frickin’ Fox News Sunday_, or whatever their Sunday morning windbag show is called. Transcripts are available. And sure, Monday noon isn’t exactly prime time, but does that mean a reporter can’t get out of bed that early in order to cover the frickin’ story??

And it’s certainly not [Josh Marshall’s impression](http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2004_08_29.php#003387) that the Speaker was “curiously inaccessible during this convention”:

>
> I’ve talked to reporters who’ve asked Hastert this around the convention hall. And he’s been aggressively restating the ‘charge.’ I’m told he even shoved his finger in the chest of one of them when repeating it.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but over the past couple of weeks, I’ve started to consider cancelling my Washington Post subscription. Excepting times when I was living too far from D.C., in pre-Web days, to get the WaPo regularly, I’ve been reading the Post nearly every morning for over forty years.

They do have some very good reporting, some days. (Their story in May of last year on the failed WMD hunt was a masterpiece.) But too many days, it’s like Krugman says: if the Dems claimed the Earth was round, and the Bush Administration said it was flat, the header would be “Shape of Earth: Views Differ”, ascribing equal credibility to both sides. And then there are the low-hanging fruits of stories that they miss altogether, like this Hastert story, or Bush’s oft-repeated claim that the rich don’t pay taxes.

And to think it was once the paper that broke the Watergate story.

Well, you know how it is, these things ebb and flow. The Press realized that they went overboard during the Clinton era and focused too much on what the President was doing, so they’re showing “restraint” in presidential coverage so as not to embarrass the office again.

Of course, once Kerry wins, they’ll all realize that they were WAY too easy on Bush, and will vow not to be caught asleep at the switch again, and so will pubicize and magnify every little fart President Kerry emits.

Well, I always knew the press couldn’t tell front from rear!

Hmmm. I wonder what Larry Flynt is up to these days. He is good at reminding people of the importance of securing glass houses.
