Of the four Mamas and Papas, only one is still alive: Michelle Phillips. ☹ John Phillips died in 2001. Cass Elliot died in 1974. It makes me feel old. I remember when I first heard “Monday, Monday” on the radio and fell in love with the group. Ba-da, ba-dada, da… ---

All the leaves are brown, and the sky is gray. I’ve been for a walk, on this winter day. Denny’s safe and warm, or at least that’s what they say California Dreamin’ came to an end today. Rest well, Denny. ---

Yes, the Mama’s and the Papa’s were quite a group. A great documentary about the foursome is called [“Mamas and the Papas: Straight Shooters”](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299021/) If nothing else I learned that it was **Denny Doherty** and _not_ John Phillips singing “the lead” in “Monday, Monday”. Before I found that out, I always thought Denny was the Zeppo Marx of the group. Wow was I wrong. Denny was an important part of that group’s distinctive sound. Rest well Denny. ---

It’s a sad time. I was fortunate to see Denny perform, along with John Phillips and his daughter Mackenzie, and Spanky McFarlane, in a touring version of the M&P, back in the late '80s. We’ll miss you, Denny.
