Piggybacking on the various threads on the lottery win.

Are there third party companies that provide coverage for accounts that have much more in them than FDIC covers?

[Here](http://www.cdars.com/) is one such company. You deposit the money in one bank that is a member of the network and then CDs are issued by other banks in the same network.

Yes. [And several ways to do it](http://www.bankrate.com/banking/savings/6-ways-to-insure-excess-deposits/). On top of that you can get almost anything insured if you pay enough for the insurance. It may not seem like you’d have to pay much to insure US bank deposits but for any significant length of time for the coverage it could be considered extremely risky because the next major bank failure in this country may not result in bailout.
