Inspired by [this](https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=644061) thread. So far as I can tell we haven’t done this before - but I’m sure someone will put me right if we have. A few examples of insulting names for city residents cropped up in the earlier thread. Surely we can add to them. I’ll start - I’m a Jam Eater. I’m originally from the industrial North West of England - our very own rust belt, almost. As the mines and steelworks closed and unemployment (and poverty, natch) increased, the residents of one town would take to calling residents of the (very similar) town just up the road “Jam Eaters” - because _they_ were so poor that all they could afford to eat was jam (jelly) sandwiches. A better example might be on the opposite coast where Geordies (Newcastle) and Mackems (Weirside) delight in calling residents of Hartlepool “[Monkey hangers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_hanger)”. > [@](#): > > According to local folklore, the term originates from an incident in which a monkey was hanged in Hartlepool, England. People from Middlesbrough (also the north east of England) are “smog monsters” because it has something of an industrial history. ---

Illinoisans refer to Wisconsonians as “Cheese-heads.” They, in turn, call us “Penny-heads.” Neither term is particularly insulting, I guess, but they are intended to be deprecating. ---
