Depressed people, what's your depression anthem?

Never had one and don’t want one either.

Too depressed to read the whole thread. Has anyone mentioned “Jimi Thing” by the Dave Matthews Band?

These Days - Nico

Leslie Fish did a number of songs where she had arrangements for various Kipling poems. These really spoke to me. The Undertaker’s Horse was a good one, but really, it was the Birds of Prey March that I find fits best - it’s an utterly bleak, hopeless poem, set to a cheery marching tune. Great exercise song, though.

Looks Like Rain… thanks…now i miss her even more! 10 years later.

The Eagles Desperado, particularly the reprise:

The queen of diamonds let you down,
She was just an empty fable
The queen of hearts you say you never met
Your twisted fate has found you out
And it’s fin’lly turned the tables
Stole your dreams and paid you with regret
Desperado
(Is there gonna be anything left, is there gonna be anything?)
You sealed your fate up a long time ago
(Ain’t it hard when you’re all alone in the center ring?)
Now there’s no time left to borrow
(Is there gonna be anything left?)
Only stardust
(Maybe tomorrow)
Maybe tomorrow
Maybe tomorrow

“Late Night, Maudlin Street” by Morrissey

It used to be Brain Damage/Eclipse but then I was brain damaged and almost had a permanent eclipse.

So now I stick with Gloomy Sunday and when I want to liven things up I gather round my cockatiels and sing Der Fuerher’s Face.

“Gone Away” - from the “Pickin’ On Bluegrass” Album.

and

“She’s Gone” by Black Sabbath from “Technical Ecstasy”. As soon as I hear those strings, the hair stands up on the back of my neck and it brings tears to my eyes every single time.
It’s like picking at a wound for me, I have to be careful when I play it, sometimes I can listen to it and I’ll be fine. Other days…not so fine and I’ll think “What the hell did you do that for?”.

(Luckily it’s followed by “Dirty Women” on the album, and that always lifts my spirits for some reason!)

Beethoven, oddly enough. The second movement of the 7th Symphony.

To me the best thing to get me out of a funk is The Blues. Play it loud and hope no one can hear you singing.

Blues Brothers version of Shotgun Blues

It’s hard to gamble
When you lose every bet
Hard to save money
When you’re 20 years in debt
The blues is fallin, fallin down on me like rain
I’m gonna take a shotgun and disconnect my brain

Always has the opposite effect on me than the lyrics would suggest.

Whisky Rain - The Railbenders

Here I am once again
In this darkness on my own
And I don’t have anybody to
Show me the light
I am alone

So one more glass
to drown this sorrow
then it’s time for me to go
I won’t be back here tomorrow
Where I’m headed Lord only knows

And I’ve been drivin’
down this dark stretch of highway
for as long as I can recall
and it don’t matter if you don’t approve
of my way
that wont’ change things at all

Back in the day when college wasn’t going well for me I would wander around campus smoking and listening to Misplaced Childhood. I never got into post-Fish Marillion.

“How Soon is Now” by The Smiths (popular trend)

There’s a club that you like to go,
You could meet someone who really loves you.
So you go and you stand all alone,
And leave all alone,
And go home and cry and want to die.

Wow. I have a homemade tape of nothing but the theme to MASH over and over for that very reason. The one most likely to pick me up when I have the blues is by Amad Jamal.

The first lines from The Who’s “I Am One” (Quadrophenia):
“Every year is the same, and I feel it again: I’m a loser. No chance to win.”

And “Born Under a Bad Sign” (Pat Travers version)
“If it wasn’t for bad luck, I wouldn’t have no luck at all”

This song eerily describes the way I feel when the black bitch has me by the throat. i don’t get depression by itself but also a feeling of haunted, solitary detachment from everyone else.

Psychedlic Furs - Love My Way

Simon And Garfunkel’s I Am A Rock,

*… I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.

I am a rock,
I am an island.

And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.*

CMC fnord!

Tom Waits - “If I have to Go”

There’s nothing for me, in this world full of strangers
It’s all someone else’s idea
I don’t belong here, and you can’t go with me
You’ll only slow me down
