Depressed TA: plagarism. Long-ish

[apologies for continuing to hijack]

Yes! Definitely the mushroom guy. And yes, Ancient Greek the language. Considering that it’s an important part of my major, I really regret ending up with that guy as a professor. I feel like I’m going to have trouble with Greek for a long time, Because this asshole never bothered to teach us the basics, like principle parts.

I have friends who have taken his myth class. They agree that it’s an easy good grade, but absolutely despise the prof.

arisu- I don’t want to continue to hijack the thread, but would you mind if I contacted you off-board (via email)? You sound like my kind of person, being into Ancient Greek and all.

I don’t mind.

(Be advised that it may be a day or two before I get back to you; I don’t check the address in my profile every day.)

Re-hijacking this thread with exciting update:
So I’m sitting around grading final exams so that we can turn in grades on Monday. One of the three (who otherwise was heading towards a B or so) e-mails me:
“Hi, this is XXXX from your Monday class. i was wondering what grade i got on my second paper. if you have that and the final grade, i’d be interested to know. thanks.”

Hah! So how do I answer this? “I haven’t finished grading finals, but what do YOU think you should get on the paper? This is a trick question. Hint: I’ve heard of the internet.”? I think he is the only of the three that will be very surprised (the other two would possibly have failed anyway-- this is the guy that cooked up fake citations). I’m not looking forward to this-- have mailed prof and head-TA for guidance.

Oh! Oh, or “Your paper was very well-written. It is unfortunate that it was not written by you.”

E-mail him back, with the message consisting of links to the websites he plagiarised from. I’d go for understatement after that, myself, akin to: “This will have a negative impact on your grade.”

I’m not sure if anyone has posted this already, but I know that back at my high school ( i just graduated!!!) I was in International Baccalaureates. And to make sure we weren’t plagarizing our work they ran it through www.turnitin.com it was very helpful. It’s also helpful to students as well, because it tells you if you haven’t cited your work right, and it gives you a report as to how much has been plagarized. It’s a great site.
