Inspired by [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=179944). Sprechen Sie Deutsch? Ich habe, wann ich war in die Schule, ein bisschen Deutsch gelernt. Seit fast 5 Jahre spreche ich nicht sehr viel der Sprach, aber ich moechte betreiben. Ich mache wahrscheinlich viel Irrtum… wenn ich Irrtum machen, korregieren Sie mich bitte. I’m not really sure whether the mods like it when they can’t read what we are talking about. (Though **Coldfire** should be able to read German). But since it still is pretty harmless, I guess we can try. If a mod doesn’t want this, could (s)he please tell so, then we’ll stop. Um beim heutigen Subjekt zu bleiben: es gibt einige Deutschen Dopern. **Einmon** ist der erste dem ich erinnere. Weil ich auch Deutsch gelernt habe im Schule (seit viele Jahre), habe ich es auch praktisiert wenn ich Philosophie studiert habe. Kant und Hegel sind nicht gemeinsames Deutsch, aber ich glaube, sei besser denn keine Übung. Auf Deutsch schreiben ist viel schwieriger denn lesen, soviel ist klar. Wenn ich so frech möchte sein: es gibt einige Grammatikalfehler im andere posts. (ich mache auch manche Fehler, besonderes im Deklension, glaube ich). **phraser** : ich glaube, es sei ‘wenn’, nicht ‘wann’, und auf Deutsch man sagt nicht ‘wann ich war in die Schule’ im mitten der Satz. Es ist ‘die Sprache’, auch im 4ten Fall. Statt ‘betreiben’ ist warscheinlich ‘versuchen’ gemeint. Vielfalt of Irrtum ist ‘Irrtümer’, so ‘viele Irrtümer’. Und es lautet ‘korrigieren’. Ich glaube, es muss sein ‘Ist irgendjemand(em) (?) interessiert’, oder ‘Gibt es jemand der sich dafür interessiert?’ Und **Angue** : du soll deine Orthographie beobachten: ‘can’ statt ‘kann’, ‘Deutch’ statt ‘Deutsch’. Pfui! 🙂 (Wer wird meine Fehler korrigieren?) ---

Normalerweise schliessen wir meistens Topics in Sprachen anders als Englisch. Aber da ich selbst ein Bisschen Deutsch rede, glaub’ ich dass es schoen geht. 🙂 Ich habe selbst fuenf Jahre Deutsch gehat in der Schule: ich spreche es zimmlich gut, aber meine Grammatik ist einfach schrecklich! Wann ich in die Ferien fahre zu Deutschland oder Oesterreich, kann ich mich doch immer retten. _(Fellow mods, I just told the posters here that while we usually close topics in foreign languages (well, foreign to you, heh), this one’s OK since I speak a bit of German myself. Ich habe zwei Jahre Deutsch gestudiert in Gymnasium, aber ich habe viel vergessen. Ich war in den Nederlands in März und ich versuche Deutsch sprechen mit zwei Mädchen aus Bayern in die Jugendherberge, aber wann ich versuche sagen, “Learning foreign languages is very important,” ich habe wirklich gesagt, “Learning foreign languages is very impotent.” Ich denke, ich musse öfter praktizieren … :o ---

From what I can tell, the most common mistake in this thread is to “translate” English phrases into German. However, while the words are ported correctly, they just don’t make as much sense rowed up as a sentence. For example we have “Wann ich in die Ferien fahre zu Deutschland oder Oesterreich, kann ich mich doch immer retten.” and “Ich gehe zu Hause.”. While it is in some cases correct to say “fahre zu” oder “gehe zu”, in these two instances you should have picked “nach” instead of “zu”. So the sentences should read “Wenn ich in den Ferien nach Deutschland oder Österreich fahre, kann ich mich jedoch immer irgendwie durchschlagen.” (forgive me for taking the liberty to rephrase the whole “retten” thing. The intention is clear, yet no native speaker would word it like that.) and “Ich gehe nach Hause.” But I didn’t really write in order to nitpick. What I wanted to say is that it’s best to avoid translating a single word, if you don’t know how to express something. Alas, this isn’t taught in schools. School teachers - at least the ones I had - are of the opinion that you need to understand each word in a given sentence (whereas I think that understanding the gist is more important. If you can deduce what something means, you’ll be able to use the words in the same context and you are more likely to catch the connotation of words, which are often lost in a mere translation). The only way to really learn a language is to be exposed to the living language and to pick up figures of speech, which are really un-teachable. ---

Well, in fairness, he did say that his grammar was terrible, and then went and proved it. And the objective of the thread is to learn, understand and correct these errors. The correct usage of prepositions is one of many weak points that I personally have with the German language. Per your point on literal tranlations, I was thinking about this on Friday night, as I watched a German film with the subtitles on. Normally I’d translate why? = warum?, but in conversation this became sometimes “wieso” or “wozu”, depending on usage. I could have taken a shot at all of the above in German, but would have doubtless mangled it completely, to the point of incomprehensibility.
