I used to think that about **Reeder**. As irritating as he was, I always thought I’d help him out IRL, just because he was a part of this community. Somehow, he was different from all the other deluded, self-hating, pathetic, narrow minded, spreaders of ignorance out there.

If you actually read what **Der Trihs** wrote instead of looking for calls for violence, it’s pretty clear that he was saying that elements in the Right are inciting violence, and that they’ll only stop when it backfires on them. He wasn’t calling for violence- if anything, he was decrying it.

**Der Trihs** doesn’t need any help from the OP in looking like a left-wing loon.

Isn’t that the point though? One could very easily argue the same about Sarah Palin and her target page on facebook. A reasonable person can guess that she just means targeting that district for political action and not violence, and yet people are arguing that it was a call for violence. I myself, while understanding the point of the map, don’t think it helped anything to put it mildly.

I don’t think Palin was literally calling for violence, but she was calling for action, using violence as a metaphor. \*\*DT \*\*was just making a prediction. He was not calling for action.

Again, neither do I. Again, that was the point. The map _can seem_ like a threat and his post _can seem_ like a threat.

I certainly don’t think that DT wants republicans shot any more than Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachman or any of the rest listed did. Not so sure about Glenn Beck, but probably not. None of these people said what they said because they wanted violence. They wanted attention. They wanted a reaction. Der Trihs wanted a reaction. The only real difference is scale.

He’s not saying anything of the sort. He’s saying that the Republicans are stirring up the shit buckets that their followers have for brains, and they’re only going to feel a modicum of regret when one of their monsters turns on them.

Wouldn’t you also think the same about what Bachman and Angle said? I would. I do think rhetoric like that used in the Kelly ad is pushing the line on though.

Still, I believe a lot of this gun rhetoric isn’t intended to spur nutjobs to shoot anyone. I think it’s motivated by the left’s constant efforts to implement gun control and it’s an attempt to rub their right-wing defiance of the idea in the leftie’s faces. It’s also a metaphor for the type of preparation and determination suggested by the saying, “he’s loaded for bear.”

In other words, Palin, Bachman, et al. are focusing attention certain problems and certain targets they think are responsible for those problems, and then gunning for those targets with votes.

It is utterly ridiculous to think that any of these ads are really subliminal efforts to get right-wingers to shoot bullets at left-wingers. And if those of you here can’t bring yourself to believe that, then try considering the fact that doing so would only serve to create sympathy for the left, something the right would be loathe to do because it would result in more votes for the left.

I don’t get that conclusion at all from reading what **Der** wrote. Like, at all. Not even if I stretch and twist it as tho it were some kind of taffy.

I would like to see what evidence you have to the effect that the cop-shooter in Pittsburg was acting on behalf of the conservative movement. Maybe he was, I’m not aware of the incident. But I’d prefer not to have to just take your word for it.

Andrew Joseph Stack III, the guy who flew his plane into the IRS building was most certainly a nutjob, but there is no indication he was either a right-winger or that his act was intended to further right-wing ideology. He had a hard-on toward the IRS, but Hollywood is full of liberals with hard-ons toward the IRS. Plus he was a software guy and a musician. Sounds like a leftie to me. 😃

The guys who vandalized Gifford’s office may have been overly zealous or they may have done it as a tactic. But there is no evidence they are crazy unless you have something to show to the contrary.

And what Christian militia guys? Most of the militia guys I’m aware of are badass types of the sort that drink beer, screw and kick somebody’s ass. Are there really any militias out there devoted to and centered around Christianity? If so, I’m not aware of them.

So when Jesse Kelly held a rally inviting his supporters to “Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully a automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly” he was clearly just intending to hold a rally to support gun rights.

No, but he was using rhetoric that is code for “Let’s defy those fucking liberals with their namby-pamby gun laws and their pro-illegal immigration attitudes and get together to kick their asses out of office!”

If you really think that Kelly and his supporters want people to start shooting leftie politicians with M16’s, you’re every bit as big a nutjob as you think they are.

> But let’s not talk about any of that. Let’s talk about Der Trihs, a random guy on the internet. That Der Trihs, he sure is a pistol, isn’t he.

I didn’t read DT as calling for violence against Republicans, but as predicting that violence against Democrats will continue until Republicans are targeted. That isn’t a call for targeting, but a prediction, and a wrong one at that. Violence begets more violence, not less. I hope that no Republicans are targeted (hell, I prayed for 8 years that no one would make a martyr out of Bush or Cheney). But the fact of the matter is that right wing rhetoric is deliberately reckless and provocative in such a way that those of weak minds would be incited to do their dirty work for them. This is as much violence as a result of speech as the murder of Dr. Tiller was. There are lots of unhinged people out there and when people like Beck and Coulter play to them it is likely that one of them will snap, not unlikely.

I don’t know enough about Bachman to say one way or the other. As for Angle, the kindest interpretation would be that she just wasn’t thinking. A neutral interpretation would be that she did, in fact, advocate armed insurrection. She said what she said. and she can backpedal all she wants. But in the end, we’re only left with the actual words that came out of her mouth.

I might be a bit more lenient in the interpretation of she was speaking off the cuff as opposed to in a prepared speech. But still, it was a very stupid thing to say. Unless she meant it.

I think you’re confusing two different threads here. This isn’t about the recent shooting in AZ. It’s about whether **DT** ’s post was a call for violence. I don’t think it was. I do think that Angel’s statements about Second Amendment Remedies was. As to whether that’s shooting political opponents, or violently resisting the police or other authorities is unclear.

Actually I was getting a couple of **Merneith’s** posts mixed up. I read back upthread and found my error. I agree that Angle shouldn’t be saying things like how unhappy with Congress might start looking to 2nd Amendment remedies. I suspect that she meant to suggest that Congress was operating so arrogantly and so clearly against the will of the people (ala Pelosi’s exhortations to House members that they should vote for the health bill even though it cost them their jobs) that an armed revolution may become necessary in order to restore government to the people.

I understand the sentiment, but she should have chosen her words more carefully. But I still don’t think she was exhorting conservatives to take up arms and start taking potshots at left-wing politicians.
