Good news about the Democratic mayor in Jacksonville. I don’t know if I attribute this to any shortcoming on the part of DeSantis, perhaps she simply ran a good race. Don’t forget that DeSantis had a convincing win last year, although it must be noted that his opponent was well past his expiration date. I think DeSantis can’t win the nomination but DJT can lose it. More indictments, more scandal, health issues could all take out DJT and if it happens, DeSantis waltzes to the nomination. The general election is another story. Abortion is going to be a giant millstone around every Republican’s neck and DeSantis is going all in on a position that is not where America is. Add to that his obsession with doing battle with a cartoon mouse. Add to that his personality deficiencies, combining the warmth of Don Rickles, the charsima of Mike Dukakis, and the common touch of Elon Musk. Win the general election? Not possible. Get the nomination? Very possible. ---

Whaaaaa…? First of all, that’s a negative slogan. (I’m not sure what percentage of the country think turning into Florida is an improvement for America. As a Florida resident for almost 10 years now who moved here for work let me update you … The map of Florida as an “F” is a _very_ common advertising motif here in Florida. Both for political advertising and ordinary product advertising. Rotated 180 degrees it sometimes serves as an “L”. This iconic use carries a very strong whiff of nativism. As in “real” Florida is only the people born here, not all the northeastern & midwestern retirees who’ve moved here over the last 40 years. And most certainly not all those _shudder_ non-white people from the Caribbean and points South. “Make America Florida” has been the main rallying cry of the Florida RW for probably 5-6 years now. It stands for a low-tax highly-libertarian in-your-face rules-are-for-little people attitude to everything. It also stands for the rural part of Florida, not the effete cities. And the virulent culturally ~~conservative~~ reactionary (read “racist”) attitudes common there. Fun is first, macho posturing is second, and serious is just not part of the program at all. I believe a sizeable majority of the other 49 states’ culturally ~~conservative~~ reactionary (read “racist”) low-education and/or rural types would totally love that idea once it was sold to them in one syllable words. Meanwhile the more traditional Rs would love the low-taxes, no-regulations, no such thing as consumer protection, approach to business regulation that Florida embodies. It’s the smash-and-grab approach to commerce. There’s also a full court press on here in Florida to prevent counties and cities from having any role in business regulation or zoning. Which means just one statehouse to bribe/influence to be able to build your business empire free of any interference. Or taxation. DeSantis himself reminds me of the fictional alien Kzinti. Inherently nasty combative beasts who would be much more effective if only they didn’t get too excited and foil their own attack plans by firing wildly at the wrong targets prematurely. E.g. Disney. ---

He’ll promise to push his bigotry and despotism on full display in Florida onto the rest of the country. I’m sure there’s a segment of the right that would love that. It’s the “I’m more MAGA than Trump!” strategy. On that note, it really is a step beyond MAGA, and I am sure the blatant resemblance to the original phrase is very intentional. Trump’s messaging was to move America back to some mythical time in the past when everything was better (and the country did a better job of oppressing the right people). DeSantis is saying he wants to push the country even farther than that, to a point that it has never been, even at its darkest point. It’s a doomed attempt to out-Trump Trump. ---
