I thought hyphens counted as spaces, ie, that two-word hyphenated compounds were considered two words. ---

In addition to this [definition](http://www.gtscompanies.com/printa_e.html#c), MS Word as counts it as one word. Compound word: **a word** made up of two or more existing words, **often separated by a hyphen** (eg, bull-headed) (their example, not mine). I admit I cheated a bit [here](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=9196308&postcount=314) but it’s _just a game_.
