Describe your DVD collection

You used to be able to see my DVD collection online. I had it on DVD Aficionado and then they changed their format. So I switched to DVD Spot and re-entered all of my DVDs - and then they shut down the site.

So now you’ll have to go by a description: my DVD collection is huge - literally in the thousands. In order to save space, I take the discs out of their original packaging and store them in binders. The binders hold 200-300 discs each and I have over twenty of them.

The last time I updated my list (Dec.) I had 422 titles. Twelve are stand-up comic type shows (Lewis Black, Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, Sam Kinison, etc.), 133 concert DVDs and the rest movie movies. Also around forty burned copies friends have made for me. Some I wouldn’t buy, but most are from videotapes I will replace if anyone ever releases them on DVD (David Gilmour’s About Face, Dire Strait’s Alchemy, Sunset Strip, etc.)

Music discs are alphabetical by artist on a shelf in one room, the movies are alphabetical on another shelf in another room. Box sets are together on the top of that shelf. Movies for the grandkids are separated out on a shelf they can reach.

Other than the concert stuff, I usually buy movies I’ve seen and know I will watch again, waiting for them to be released for sale (and on sale) by the video rental place. Boxed sets and seasons of TV shows don’t always get sold that way, so I have to really like them a lot (BBC’s Office, Firefly, Arrested Development, The Tick, etc.)

So far this year I’ve added Hancock, Iron Man, Electric Apricot - Quest For Festeroo (Les Claypool’s version of the jamband Spinal Tap; very funny), The Who’s Amazing Journey and Spock’s Beard - Live. Also the Don Knotts Reluctant Hero pack; The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, The Reluctant Astronaut, The Shakiest Gun in the West and The Love God, three movies I loved as a kid (and one I’d never heard of) on one disc.

We have something like 1500 DVDs, and they run the gamut from blockbusters to arthouse to Hong Kong action films. We prefer to buy than rent. This is the most recent picture of our DVDs, though there are more than that now (not as much white space left as you see in the picture). The pre-recorded VHS shelves contain videos that aren’t on DVD or that we haven’t yet upgraded to DVD yet, or that we’ve upgraded but haven’t gotten rid of the VHS yet. We have thousands more VHS tapes (not pre-recorded) in the dining room.

Ours is mostly horror, cheezy horror, comedy, action (We appreciate lots of carnage, blood, etc.), and sci-fi. No romance-y crap, though. We detest that sort of thing.
Oh, and porn.

I have 100+ DVDs, and about 7 VHS tapes*, which is rather silly considering I no longer have a VCR. I keep them for sentimental reasons.

My DVD collection is slipping towards being predominantly TV series (mostly sitcoms and Britcoms). There are a lot of old movies in there which include a few Hitchcock films, a few more recent comedies, romantic comedies and dramas, and some musicals. There are hardly any action movies, with Independence Day being the only real exception. I have a bunch of Disney/Pixar/other animated movies too, but I’ve put them in the little one’s room to try to make it look like they’re hers, hehe.

  • My VHS tape collection consists of: Guns N’ Roses - Making of Estranged, Metallica - Two of One, Pleasantville, America’s Sweethearts (which I bought from the video store because they’d priced it cheaper than their hire price), Clean Slate, Little Women and Emma.

Until recently I had about 3 DVDs. Although I probably see about 50 movies a year at the cinema I don’t feel any need to have the DVD gathering dust on my shelf. Recently I discovered the joy of watching whole TV series (which are like 12 hour movies) and I now have sets of Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Wire, Extras and Spaced. However when I have watched all of them I will give them away and be back to the 3 DVDs I bought because it was cheaper than renting them.

Around 600 DVDs/DVD sets right now. (Regardless of the amount of discs, I count a SKU as “one DVD”). 100 or so docmentaries, 50 or so TV shows (usually season sets), 25 music (concerts or video collections), 25 stand-up comedian shows, 10 porn (including a couple GuanoLad might have worked on IIRC), the rest are fiction movies with about half foreign/arthouse, the other half split between good mainstream stuff, so-so stuff picked up for cheap, and “Incredibly Strange” stuff. Near 100% complete collections of a few actors/actresses (William H. Macy, Charlize Theron, Audrey Tautou) and directors (Kubrick, Gondry, Kevin Smith, Michael Moore, Errol Morris).

Of other formats: around 500 laserdisc-- 20 games (LaserActive or other), 10 TV show sets, 10 music/music video, 10 reference, 20 documentaries, 1 or 2 comedians. The rest are movies, heavily biased toward foreign/arthouse. Around 200 VHS-- around 50 anime, 50 music, 100 movies, mostly mainstream fare.

There ya go.

Last time I checked I had just under 500 titles. A lot of SF television series sets, a number of British TV series (including both of the Dorothy Sayers Lord Peter series, and the complete Rumpole set), plus a varied collection of other TV series. A very eclectic movie collection, everything from comedy to musicals to action movies.

And a small collection of porn, which I haven’t bothered to catalog.

We have about a hundred, I’d say. Almost all are theatrical movies - no porn. We rarely go to the theater, so I have lots of “just released” movies that I wanted to see, and quite a few Academy Award winners. Others are movies I love to rewatch - Jaws, Dirty Dancing, Fried Green Tomatoes, Shawshank Redemption, to name a few of my very eclectic mix.

My husband buys any crap movie that’s cheap. Dumb and Dumber, Cheech and Chong movies - he loves stupid comedies.

We have an entertainment unit that holds DVD’s, and I have them all alphabetized.

I actually only legally OWN about 20 DVDs. Lord of the Rings boxset, some rare music DVDs, that crazy Memento DVD with all of the lose pages, Mean Girls autographed by Tina Fey…mostly stuff where I really liked the packaging. I actually used to have a pretty big collection, over 150 of movies, TV box sets, etc, but I had to ebay most of it when I fell on hard times.

I also have multiple binders of copied DVDs. Typically I’ll only copy a disc if it’s either a movie I know I’ll watch over and over, or if it has a bunch of interesting bonus features. I also have an obsessive hobby of collecting Criterion DVDs, as that publisher only releases movies which have significant impact on the film industry…I’ve discovered so many foreign and indie films through that company.

Aside from my actual DVDs, I have a couple more binders of “DVD rips”…which are heavily compressed movies and tv shows which can store about 12 hours on one disc. My DVD player (Phillips FTW!) will also play these. I have catalog index files on my computer so that I can look up the movie/show I want to watch by disc #.

Yes, I’ll admit it. 90% of the stuff I have hasn’t even been watched yet. I really really need to get over this digital media packratting.

ETA: the only two porn titles I own are Specs Appeal: Girls with Glasses 5 & 7. I keep them in a separate drawer, and since I can’t stand hardcore porn, I only take it out when my girlfriend wants a laugh.
