I like it _because_ it’s trashy, silly, and barely believable. I like watching it _because_ I don’t like the characters too much, but not too little, either. My favourite is and always was Bree, and for better or worse, I can’t wait to see what she does next. She makes me laugh the hardest, sometimes in glee, sometimes in sympathy, sometimes in a weird “Bree, _no_!” moment.

I don’t _want_ these characters to do believable things. This is a goofy little fantasy show for me. I _want_ Susan to throw a tantrum and make an ass of herself, I _want_ Lynette to be a manipulative person who spills coffee on her boss’s lap to get her way, I _want_ Gabriel to believe the world revolves around her (and stops at her command), I _want_ my precious Bree to be almost mechanical and robotic, pausing to wonder how to get out of this newest, sometimes most simple mess, only to choose the strangest solution and yet come out on top with a smile on her face and not a hair out of place.

I don’t want _real_. I want\* Desperate Housewives\*. 😉

Amen.
Bree is also my favorite. What the heck…There will always be at least a handful of us around to discuss the show with each week.

What’s Carlos done, other than break his back providing his spoiled little princess with everything she could want? It was Gabby who got Carlos’ mother killed, and now she’s spending the money on cars and _still_ trying to have an affair.

I feel for Carlos, but he does have flaws. For one thing, he put career success above his wife and even above business ethics. Also, he sabotaged Gabrielle’s birth control and lied about it. But he does seem to be an otherwise solid, dependable guy that Gabrielle is constantly stomping on.

The short answer: she’s a whore. She loves spending his money.

Another amen. Frankly, I’m a little surprised by some of the reactions. The show has obviously been a dark comedy parody of soaps from the beginning. It isn’t supposed to be realistic. It’s supposed to be the Stepford wives who escaped and are out for revenge. And Bree is the Melancholy’s Melancholy. I love her.

Frankly, I’m really disappointed with the direction that _Well-adjusted, Sympathetic Housewives_ has taken. My expectations are not being met at all.

Oh, wait a minute…

I agree that the first three episodes of this season have been blah at best, nothing has really _happened_. Last season there were endless moments that had me at the edge of my seat, screaming, “Oh. . . my. . . GOD!” This season? Not so much. I’m really hoping things pick back up.

**Lynette’s** story line is boring- period. Something crazy needs to happen there, like, maybe her husband will have an affair and get caught by the kids or. . . well, this is why I don’t write the shows. 😉

Personally, I _like_ **Gabby**. Ok, she’s not perfect- hell, she’s a manipulative slut. And yes, she married Carlos for his money, but he only married her because she is beautiful. They deserve each other and play off of each other well (always trying to one up each other for control). I think Eva does a great job with Gabby’s character because you get hints that she really loves Carlos, but is putting up this money grubbing front to protect herself (as to not lose control). Also, yes, she is an idiot for being upset at John, but it is a pretty normal reaction. I know I’ve flipped my fair share of times when I saw my exes with their new girlfriends (even if we were long over).

I’m not too fond of this kinder and gentler **Edie**. Granted, she was never a horrible person, but there was always something going on there. For some reason, nice, church going, guitar playing Edie doesn’t really entertain me.

**Bree** is amazing, but- as was already said- her story line is growing predictable. Pharmacy guy needs to do something awful to her or my interest is going to be lost pretty quickly. I also agree that she would probably think she had feelings just because a lie detector said so. Actually, now that I think about it, a murder trial could actually be interesting. We’ll see!

But **Susan**. Oh, Susan. How I hate Susan. Her character makes no sense and is just plain annoying. But, like a few others have said, it’s a soap opera and that can make it entertaining. Ok- I can buy that. What drives me nuts the most? It is _painful_ to watch her because Terri is so. friggin. skinny. Honestly, I’ve had to change the channel during a few of her scenes because she just looks sick. There is a fine line between thin (think Eva Longoria who is absolutely TINY) and sick. [Oh and, um, Cite](http://www.diet-blog.com/archives/hatcher.jpg)

All in all, I hope the show picks back up. I miss the excitement!

It’s interesting to read some of the comments of the show’s supporters (like Larry Mudd, Liberal, Anastaseon) that are all of the “it’s a parody” “it’s not real” theme. If one went back a year, to when the show was a New Sensation, there was a lot of punditry (Newsweek, for example) that said that the show was somehow saying something important about women and suburbia.

I also don’t understand the categorization of DH as a comedy. **West Wing** (in the Aaron Sorkin years) kicked butt in the Drama category of the Emmys, and there were more laugh-out-loud moments in the average WW episode than the average DH.

That _is_ pretty silly, but then again, I don’t need Newsweek to define something for me to enjoy it - I’ll take what I like from it (but this is coming from a person who can find many dramas to be comedies). 😉 If there’s a deeper meaning to DH, I don’t see it, and it’s not ruining my enjoyment of the show, for certain.

It’s trash; junk food. And it’s _delicious_. 😃 Your taste for the stuff may vary.

Huh. I don’t recall anyone claiming that _Desperate Housewives_ was Important Social Commentary. In fact, if we go back about a year, to the [first impressions of Dopers](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=279030), the first comment is:

> [@twickster](#):

And the rest are about the same:

>
> This is a show that does not take itself at all seriously, which is nice.

It’s been an over-the-top comedy soap from the start.

I don’t know what you mean about _Newsweek_ touting it as ‘important.’ Is [this](http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6542185/site/newsweek/) the article you’re thinking of?

> [@](#):
>
> “Housewives” is a soap opera, but it may also be the funniest non-sitcom ever. Unlike “Dynasty” or “Melrose Place,” the humor isn’t just campy. Underneath all those wonderful costumes (or lack thereof) and winks at soap conventions is a razor-sharp satire of suburbia. Every neighborhood has its local tramp, the bitter old lady who spies on people and the mother who can’t control her kids. In “Housewives,” they’re all just trampier, nastier or more highly medicated than the ones on your own street. (Hopefully.)

I think this season has just been a bit lazy for my taste. It doesn’t help that when I was watching the second ep the network screwed up and killed the second-to-last reel, so we never knew if Lynette’s husband had found the rat.

When I finally did see that scene, it was boring! Lynette comes home to find the house clean and Tom saying he hit the rat… DULL. The should have shown us Tom racing around the house like a girly man, grabbing a kid under each arm and hurling them into the bushes outside, then going back inside to do mortal combat.

Well you see, **jsc1953** , there are people out there with English degrees that are too lazy to teach high school lit so instead they sit on the couch deconstructing TV shows and [Mexican take-out menus](http://www.theonion.com/content/node/27794). They then dupe colleges into thinking that their work is both correct and important and earn bags of money.

That’s my experience anyway.
