Ouch! My fifth grade teacher, Ida Wendt, (what an inappropriate name for someone who cared about grammar!) would sit at the back of the classroom during assignments. When you were done, you carried your work back, and sat back down at your desk to do whatever you wanted to do, which for me was usually reading a book.
I loved her, and still do.
Anecdote: Mom’s last name was Hugo. She had a classmate with her first name whose last name was Igo. She also had a classmate with last name of Wendt.
