Dude, I’m a 24 year old punk rocker indie filmmaker front desk clerk in Santa Cruz and I know how to dress for these occasions. And even though I’ve only seen snow a handful of times in my life I bet I could throw together a reasonable outfit (I might need to buy a warm hat). Are you really telling me that the Vice President of the United States couldn’t figure this out? Or that he just doesn’t care? Don’t you think his press secretary would release a statement if it was about health? Don’t you mind your country constantly thumbing it’s nose at the rest of the world? ---

This is all just another example of conservative hypocrisy. If Bill Clinton has a $200 haircut at LAX, it’s a horrible crime that embarrasses the nation. (Even if most of the right-wing fables about said haircut were [plainly wrong](http://politus.blogspot.com/2004/04/debunked-clintons-haircut-at-lax.html)) If Dick Cheney looks like a pouty-faced brat at a solemn ceremony, we should all dismiss it as no big deal. (And if George and Laura Bush get [$600 haircuts,](http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/people/columns/intelligencer/10567/index3.html) it’s time to party!) ---

It just donned on me why this upsets me. This is a memorial to dead people. It’s akin to a funeral. Public officials wear black to funerals if they are there in an offical capacity. Public officials do not wear green to funerals. Public officials do not wear brown boots to funerals. Public officials rarely wear green jackets and brown boots to anything. This would not have made the press if had dressed like his wife, who had on what looks like the same parka but in black and without the logos and silly beanie. She was probably equally warm and yet still looked respectful. Wouldn’t we be a tad peeved if the president of France showed up at a Sept. 11th memorial in a zippy red suit? ---

That Post article pointed out the just the week previous Dick dress quite differently for the extreme cold of the inaugration. What gets me, is why did we send our number 2 guy. It should have been the President there, not the VP IMHO. ---

Maybe the outfit was recommended by the Secret Service, who realized that it would be impossible to have as tight security around the Auschwitz event as there was around the inauguration, and therefore hoped that any assassins would be laughing too hard at Cheney’s clown suit to aim properly. ---

The weather is why everyone there was wearing that style of clothing. Well, I happen to believe this was substance. Showing incredible disrespect for the dead is substance. One shows up for this type of event just as one shows up for court and job interviews - in uniform. He had respect for his own swearing-in, you may note, showed up in uniform on a cold, nasty Washington day. But whatever.
