His passing prompts the recollection of a simpler time, when military occupation, extraordinary rendition, and indefinite detention were crimes the U.S. committed outside its own borders.

1.) Why is this in Marketplace? Wouldn’t politics be more appropriate?
2.) I’m thoroughly disgusted with him – a supporter of torture, the invasion of Iraq, the unitary executive. They guy who lead a panel to find the best VP and nominate himself. The man was heartless – literally. The only good thing I know he did was to endorse Harris when he realized belatedly that TRump was a step too far.

Amazing that he made to it 84 with his health history-- he had 4 heart attacks starting at age 37, and numerous other cardiac episodes. They were lampooning his dire health on SNL almost 25 years ago (heart stoppage beginas about the 2:45 point). Just goes to show what a miracle modern American health care is… if you happen to be rich and politically powerful enough to afford it.

Flagged this for forum change.
Cheney was a genuinely terrible person who did irreparable to the US and lied us into a disastrous war that wasted untold blood and treasure and continued us on this path that led to this current terrible state, but his version of the GOP is pretty much out of power now, so I’ll agree it’s anticlimactic.

When I heard the news I could just hear Chris Matthews say “It’s pronounced CHEE-nee.” On the whole, a terrible person BUT he hated DJT. Maybe he was haunted by the ghost of elections past and earn himself a small bit of redemption.

I agree with the consensus; horrible person, did lots of damage, plenty of responsibility for the current disastrous state of the nation. My main reaction to his death is “too bad he didn’t die a half century or so ago, _before_ he did all that damage”.

Not odd at all. Cheney spent much of his early life fighting the cold war against the Soviets – having a Russian asset become president must’ve been very difficult for him.
Those old line republicans might’ve been dicks that were willing to commit atrocities for personal gain, but at least they wanted their country to be on top of the world. Having someone actively destroy the country they view themselves as having served must be disgusting. It’s more bizarre than the current batch don’t give a shit.

He may have hated Trump, but he helped create the fascitization of the Republican party so eff him. I hope he’s in the hottest part of Hell next to Kissinger.
