Dick = Richard. Is that a generational thing?

There’s an eloquent nickname in Glasgow for someone named Richard.

Mabozza (Richy)

as in “my balls are itchy.”

I’m in my 20s and went by “Dick” until college. I could say that it was a character building experience, to put it mildly.

My father goes by “Dick,” as did his father, and his father’s father. I have never met another “Dick” my age. I tried to change to Richard when I hit high school, but it never stuck, as everyone already knew me as “Dick.” When I got to college I began introducing myself as Rich or Richard. Now, I usually go by Rich, Richie, or Richard. However, people from my home town and a handful of college/post-college friends call me Dick. I don’t mind it now.

My boyfriend’s father’s name is Richard, his family is catholic and sorta uptight and at first it made me uneasy while when I met his parents his mom was refering to her husband as Dick. it seemed out of place and inappropriate. i think it’s more generational too, judging by other people’s responses here…seems like as media becomes more open and sex has entered more and more avenues and reaching broader audiences the word “dick” has become even more synonymous with the penis. i actually forget how long i was using the term in private times with b/f before I knew his father’s name…at one point tho i realized i should never refer to it as that ever again! maybe he addressed it soon so i knew in the begining almost immediately not to call it that? I don’t remember honestly. My nickname is “Kye”, sometimes as a joke I just use abbrv “Ky” or “Ky Ky” without the “e’s”…but there I mostly judge by the audience too…I just find it funny and makes a risque sort of statement in the way so i will occasionally spell that way!

My Grandpa was a Richard and as far as I know he was always Richard. I also have an uncle Richard and he answers to Rich or Richard.

I only knew one guy named Richard in school and he was a Rich as well.

I’m 43, and the fourth Richard in a row in my family. My grandfather was known as Dick, and a good number of my college friends called me Dick, originally just to irritate me. It takes a good deal more than that to wind me up and so it stuck. Some of those guys still call me that today, but I can’t say I’ve ever introduced myself that way.

i once knew a zombie named Dick even though his parents named him Richard.

No one has mentioned why a Richard would be called “dick”. Anyone who knows why, please explain.

B) Can’t use it without snickering, except for Dick van Dyke for some reason. I guess I’m used to it in that context. But anyone in this day and age who goes by Dick (and Lester, for that matter), I have trouble taking seriously. I know, it’s nameism. Can’t help it.
C) I’ve never physically met anyone who asked to be called this, and I’ve met a lot of people.
D) Yes, absolutely. I take phone calls for a living. We are supposed to address every customer by name at least once during the call. But I can’t bring myself to say Dick when a customer says that’s his name. I’ll say “Mister (Lastname)” instead. Or if I don’t know their last name, I’ll refrain from using their name at all. It just feels creepy. I’m a namesist!

In my high school, Rich or Ric or Richie were quite common. No Dicks in my classes.

Another great screen name/post combo.

Dex already did it.
