I saw Bridesmaids a couple days ago. My hopes were relatively high: “Hangover with women”.

It was no Hangover.

Even if we ignore the comparison, it wasn’t really that good of a movie or comedy. I was so bored I fast-forwarded several scenes.

Did anyone else not like it?

I didn’t care for the ridiculously long back and forth between Annie and Helen at the engagement party. I can only take so much self-imposed awkwardness. But I thought the movie as a whole ended up being sweet without being cloying and there was a lot of funny still in it.

This movie was mostly depressing. There was only an occasional spot of unforced humor. Thumbs down.

I too despised it.

(I didn’t like the Hangover either, mind you, which I thought had vast potential but ended up with a completely wasted premise, indulging in too many set-pieces that insisted upon themselves.)

I didn’t think it was all that great either. I kept hearing how great it was and how funny it was, yet when I saw it I didn’t much laugh. I liked the Hangover and thought I would like Bridesmaids.

I don’t really care for what I call “uncomfortable humor,” like that featured on The Office and as shown in the engagement party (mentioned above). There was more uncomfortable humor in Bridesmaids than I expected, and I didn’t like those parts. But I thought the friendship story was sweet, and I thought the romance story with the police officer was cute.

I give it a B-.

</div>

I’ve never seen _The Hangover_, but I didn’t care much for _Bridesmaids_, either. Not so much the gross-out humor, but all the characters were so dark and depressing and sad and _mean_. And that “funny slapstick” scene at the wedding, or the shower, or whatever, just made the lead look completely psychotic.

</div>

I thought it was quite funny (especially Kristen Wiig’s sad-sack character) and I liked it more than The Hangover (which I thought was more silly than funny).

I thought the romance parts were pretty weak, though.

</div>

I laughed a lot, but once it was over and I thought about the plot, it doesn’t really hang together. Lots of funny situations with an overriding theme of ‘sad sack finally gets it together’, but not a lot of forward momentum.

</div>

I laughed a couple of times during it, and really enjoyed Melissa McCarthy. Other than that, it was an overly long, painful 30 minute sitcom. It had a lot of potential, but it felt like most of the scenes were just there as a way of competing with guy gross-out humor, not for any actual plot reasons. Plus, every time I saw Jill Clayburgh I got depressed since I knew she had died just after this. I ended up seeing it twice because it was playing at someone’s home I was at, and upon the second viewing, the uncomfortable scenes were just as painful, but the Melissa McCarthy parts were even more impressive, even the painful parts. I guess I’d give it a C/C-. I can see where it’d be fun to watch with a group of girlfriends, but for the life of me I can’t see how any guy would want to sit through it.

Oh, my teenage daughter loved the British brother and sister roommates of the main character, thought they were hysterical.

I’m one of the few who found “The Hangover” too mean-spirited to be funny. So a female Hangover is not appealing.
So far I’ve found more reasons NOT to watch it than to watch it (Diarhea attack at the dress shop? Really? not gonna watch. Kristin Wiig who I’m sick to death of from too many horrid SNL skits? No).
So - are there any good reasons to see Bridesmaids?

Well I laughed at the ass bleaching joke. But putting up with the rest of the movie was hardly worth it. I thought this movie would appeal to women, but I haven’t noticed that so far. I’m not sure what all the hubbub was about. Maybe a raunchy female oriented comedy was overdue, but this one couldn’t be considered a quality attempt in my book.

That’s largely my take on it, as well, but I didn’t find the good bits to outweigh the uncomfortable humor, or the gross-out humor. C- for me.

My wife, daughter, and son-in-law (!) loved it. My sixteen year-old son and I watched it politely, hoping for a few laughs. We were sorely disappointed. I thought it was incredibly dull. I didn’t like any of the characters, except maybe for Melissa McCarthy’s role. Kristin Wiig’s Debbie-Downer character on SNL is tiresome after about ten seconds. She is unbearable in a movie of more than two hours.

I’m another one who can’t do uncomfortable humor; I had to leave the room for some of the scenes. I thought the rest of it was pretty good and I liked the actor who played the cop/love interest.

I don’t even think I smirked. I like low-brow humour fine, but this was nasty, backstabbing, one-upmanship, shitty, uncomfortable humour.

Not my kind of movie.

</div>

I love low-brow humor movies, loved The Hangover. Dodgeball is one of my favorite movies of all time. But Bridesmaids left me kinda “meh.” There were some funny bits – Melissa McCarthy and the dogs. She made me laugh. Most of the rest of it, I thought was mildly amusing, but not gut-busting funny. The diarrhea in the wedding dress… meh. The unfunny bits went on far too long. The actual funny bits were too few and far between. I just didn’t think it was all it was cracked up to be. Could’ve been way funnier.

Um, that was Rachel Dratch…

Anyway, I laughed quite a bit (and I’m a guy), as did my 70-year old mother. We were in a packed theater, which helped, I think.

I suppose I can understand not enjoying “uncomfortable” or “gross-out” humor, but that’s not me. Funny is funny.
