Are Navy nurses relevant to this discussion? I’m thinking of *South Pacific * and Ensign Nellie Forbush; one of the plot points in the musical is that all of the women in the area are nurses and therefore, as officers, off-limits to the enlisted men looking for dates.
I remember reading a book about African-Americans during WWII. It said that African-American nurses tried to volunteer as Army nurses but were turned down because they would have to be commissioned officers and would likely have to give orders to white corpsmen. The Army refused to do this, even given how much nurses were needed.
