Did Senator Charles E. Schumer really cause a run on the IndyMac Bancorp bank?

[QUOTE=groo]
The thing that bugs me is, why does it seem that people are saying that it was Schumer’s job to hide the truth from the public? If the Senate Finance Committee is supposed to keep people from knowing the sad state of our financial institutions, is there some other sub-committee whose job it is to represent the citizens’ interests?

That’s insulting. No one here claimed Schumer had some duty to lie. What we are saying is that he showed awesomely poor judgement in his public communication. He personally doesn’t bear the full responsibility for collapse, of course. But his idiocy may well have led to its collapse. No, we cannot say the bank would definitely not have collapsed otherwise. But it certainly would not have collapsed when it did. It might have had a chance to recover.

And specifically, Schumer is on the Senate Finance Committee. He just plain ought to know better.

You’re right. Sorry; I was out of line.
