The son’s last name depends on the first name of the father. The daughter’s last name may be a feminized version of that. And so on. It must be Iceland or Greenland or the Scandinavian countries; I am not so sure, since the memory is so vague.

Most Scandinavian countries have a version of this. Iceland is the most like what you mentioned.
