The euphoria of that moment - successfully eluding the Russians to fall happily into the arms of the Americans - was short lived. Their captors failed to rise quickly to the bait dangled by von Braun, an offer to commit the considerable expertise of his rocket cadre to the exclusive service of the United States. In return, he asked only for guaranteed employment by his sponsors for a reasonable period of time. Weeks later, after much dickering, authorization was granted to sign up some Germans for six months, with options to renew for an additional half year.

von Braun’s arm was broken prior to his meeting up with the Americans, in an auto accident when he was leaving Peenemünde ahead of the Russian army.
