Okay, so as far as I can tell, the problems with the themes were due to the the upgrade to a new version of Discourse, as I said in the first place. Probably something to do with [Automatic Dark Mode color scheme switching](https://meta.discourse.org/t/automatic-dark-mode-color-scheme-switching/161593) and custom themes. It looks like it’s now been quietly fixed (but not acknowledged). ---

All of that is the same under Discourse-Classic except it’s on a white background now. Back to the OP, things are back to how they were. I didn’t realize how it looked before. There’s a lot more white background with Discourse - Classic. ---

Thanks for the suggestion - I hadn’t looked at the other skins since last summer; practically forgotten they existed tbh. I’ve taken your advice and changed to Straight Dope Light. ---

I’ve apparently been using Discourse classic. The thing I like about this theme is that it’s easy to distinguish between the beginning and end of anyone’s post because the post has a white background but the rest of the page is a light grey. Text is black. For me, it’s easier to read. And the banner is white with just the SD logo in gold on blue, with the thread title as black on white.
