I should start doing that again. Problem is, I’m a vegetarian- so I think the only commandment I would be breaking is the Discordian one, ‘No Hot Dog Buns.’ So… eh.

I too have been to a few festivus parties. The last one, there was a huge board on the wall to air our grievances by writing them on a post-it note and stick them to the board labeled “grievances” I was pretty drunk and ended up writing several about how my friends are huge bitches.
A few people were going through the feats of strength but I had to get out of there pretty fast.

In college (oh, those halcyon days of yore), 4/20 was a real holiday for me and my ilk. We had a ritual, where we’d get in a circle and fire up at 4:20 p.m. Each person brought their own smoke, and we’d begin to pass.

Once, as we were leaving my friend’s apartment, a guy on a bike rode by and said “Happy Holidays”. That was it - he wasn’t trying to bum a smoke or anything, just acknowledging the season. “See? It is a real holiday!” I told my friend.
Even now, I pay homage to peace, tranquility, and good mojo every 20th of April, praying for peace at a time that reminds us of so much horror (it’s also Hitler’s birthday, the anniversay of Columbine, and close to the anniversary of the Oklahoma City Bombing).

I always note a few historical days in my calendar, as well as some make-believe ones, like Elessar’s crowning (May 1) from Tolkien’s _The Return of the King_, or the birthday of Mixtli (Sept. 20), the protagonist from one of my favorite historic novels, Gary Jennings’s _Aztec_. If I remember, I’ll silently raise a glass to them at dinner that day.
