I had a short email correspondence with author Christopher Moore several years ago. But I was afraid I might be looking like a stalker so I stopped.
I’ve also discussed Roman History (what little I know) with author Steven Saylor.
My most exciting response was after reading In the Devil’s Snare: The Salem Witchcraft Crisis of 1692, I emailed Dr Mary Beth Norton to tell her how much I enjoyed the book. And she emailed me back and thanked me for picking up on some of the subtler aspects of the book.
I wrote a letter to Bea Arthur a few years ago and I got an 8 x 10 autographed photograph of her (and she wrote “To: RedBloom”)… I had it framed for awhile and my husband eventually made me take it down. I cherish that!
I emailed Guillermo del Toro a question about the symbolism he used in Pan’s Labyrinth and he sent me back a prompt, cordial, well thought out response.
I don’t think I did. I was horrible about even sending thank you notes as a kid. By the time I got to college there was email, and nowadays many celebrities are fairly responsive through twitter. Besides, most of the actors or writers I like eventually show up at conventions where you can interact more directly. I have corresponded with author Douglas Rushkoff a few times through email, but he’s had an email discussion list for a long time so it’s not unusual.
My friend wrote to Reagan to warn him about the Indian curse against our presidents and got a signed thank you form letter.
Very, very cool; both the T-Shirt and the interview.
OT, I just re-read Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic this weekend.
I remember waiting for the latter to arrive from the publishers to the tiny bookstore next to my work. Brilliant send-up of every fantasy novel I’d ever loved.
But re-reading it (oh dear), well over 20 years later, I’m astounded that the Discworld was still recognisably itself. He’s gone into it deeper, found the real characters behind the stereotypes, but it’s very much the same place.
I still wait at the bookshop for the newest story to arrive. /OT
Red Rum and Desert Orchid were similarly sent cards and gifts annually
Wil’s great, I’ve been following him online for years!
I don’t know if it’s been mentioned on here before, but there was a fella on The Late Late Show (RTÉ) a while ago, who as a child had been press ganged into watching a Dracula movie staring Christopher Lee, which had terrified him. After a lot of ragging, his brothers/friends told him to write to Mr Lee as he was an actor and not really a vampire (in a bid to calm him down!). He wrote off and later received a signed photo of Mr Lee
In full Dracula costume.
Well, he nearly died of fright and to make matters worse, Dracula now knew where he lived!!
LOL
Personally I wrote to some TV director ages ago (like in the 80s or 90s) and got back a standard “Please do not send story submissions to any employee of <studio name> as they cannot read them for legal reasons” (OWTTE) but I didn’t send a story suggestion!
Yet another Asimov correspondent here. The short note I received in reply was typed, not on a postcard, but on a strip that was maybe 1/3 or 1/4 of a sheet of typing paper (this was way before e-mail). I thought it odd at the time, but years later learned that he always did that so as to save paper.
