I once saw a zookeeper in Seattle go absolutely NUTS when someone stood on the base of the fence at an enclosure to get a better look at a hippo. It didn’t strike me as a particularly idiotic thing to do–the person wasn’t teetering on top of the fence or anything. I asked the ZK about it later and she said Hippos are responsible for (some impressive statistic of zoo and natural human fatalities) and that while that particular individual posed no immediate threat to himself (she wasn’t too worried about the hippo’s safety in an ensuing altercation), she was enforcing basically a 0-tolerance policy for breachimg the fences…yaddayaddayadda…I wanted to hear more about how hippos maul people. Couldn’t be pretty…do they eat 'em when they’ve had their fun or are Hippos stict veggies? ---

Hippos are generally accepted as the most dangerous wild animals there are. They’re very big, very territorial and very grumpy. ---

Oh, man, about three weeks ago, we watched a docmentary of hippo BULLS. Holy crap! Were they impressive and we got to see several impressive and very bloody hippo battles. Their pudgy lips hide sabre-like tusky-fangs and they look like they shred you faster than a wild boar! They were shockingly fast too. Here I thought they were cute, rotund beasts that chewed on grass. Waaay cool program! (We don’t have cable, so we watched a lot of the cool nature channels when we’d stop for the night.) ---

They can spray their urine up to 20 feet and rather enjoy doing so…as I imagine I would if I could. 🙂 ---

In Yellowstone, they show some impressive (and entertaining) film taken when tourists wanted family members to film them right next to the nice buffalo. “Well it looked like a big old cow. Now help me down out of this tree…” We were on one walk and a huge bull was lying down right in the middle of the boardwalk. We walked back the other way, amazed as people went up to pet it! ---
