# Did your parents tell you Santana was real when you were little?

I imagined a group of pajama’d children running to the window to catch a glimpse of a sunglassed Santana playing his guitar on the new fallen snow of the roof top before vanishing into the night.
“Was he real dad?”
“If you believe he is son, if you believe. But not that stuff he did with Rob Thomas in the late 90s, don’t believe that.”

My parents didn’t tell me about Santana. I just found out on my own. I asked them about him once when I was a kid and they just sort of shrugged and said I could believe and listen if I wanted.
For years I was the only one of my friends and family who really believed, but I didn’t care. Then when I was a grown up I took my mom to the Russian River Jazz Festival one year (1994?) and we saw Santana play. And then she believed, too.

They did. It really confused me in church, leading me to chant “Oye Como Va” during prayer services. And I _still_ never got that Hot Wheels set I wanted…thanks a lot Santana.

My parents were ambivalent about Santana. So I grew up that way too. It’s a sad meaningless existence.

I wrote a short text adventure game when I was about 10 and I named one of the characters Santana. I didn’t know there was a real Santana at the time and my parents never told me anything about him yet somehow I still KNEW. I think it is the same for all kids all over the world today and during every historical era. No one needs to TELL you anything. You just KNOW deep in your soul.

We never talked about Santana in our household when I was a kid. My parents were too busy indoctrinating me in the Folkie mythos (The Kingston Trio, Peter Paul & Mary, etc.)

I never knew anybody named Stanley when I grew up. But my parents assured me it wasn’t just a made-up name and a Stan was real.

My parents tried to shield me from Santana, but I saw him play in San Francisco and was a convert immediately.
