Worse: I had to wear corduroy. Matching corduroy homemade jumpsuits with my sister. With matching hairstyles created with foam rollers that you wear overnight (which my grandma affectionately called our “colored girl” hairdos). This was the mid-to-late '80s so there is nothing about this situation that is remotely okay. ---

It got rotated into Sunday clothing about once every month or so until I finally managed to fall down a slight embankment and rip it so Mom couldn’t manage to repair it. It was well worth the seriously bloody knees and hands. And I did actually have a satin dress - I was the flower girl in the wedding of one of my cousins, and I got the obligatory fluffy white satin and lace dress. It got changed into a fairy princess costume that halloween and used for dress-up in kindergarten as we donated it to the school for the costume box. ---

I saw a huge, black Great Dane at the dog park once. He played nicely with my dog. I looked at his tag and read SATAN. Cute name, seemed to fit his appearance if not behavior. Later I met the dog’s owners. I told them, “Satan is a really sweet dog”. They were shocked/aghast/freaked out. Seems they were extremely religious people who named their dog Satin. I had misread. ---

I was in middle school when Smooth by Santana feat. Rob Thomas was a smash hit, and they explained to me who he was and how far he had fallen. Like all 12 year old boys of my day, I loved the song. ---
