Did your theater ask for ID to see Thor?

I wouldn’t have minded showing my ID if that meant I’d get to see a LOT more of Chris Hemsworth than I did.

And even for NC-17, it’s still not a law like it would be with alcohol or tobacco. If a theater wanted to let 5 year olds into an NC-17 movie, in theory they could.

I’m wondering if there is a big enough difference between adult, children and senior citizen that people are buying from the wrong age group.

I’m thinking I might go tomorrow afternoon, if I do, I’ll ask why they were doing it.

Well, yes, but almost no theaters card for that sort of thing and they’d be crazy to card everyone.:dubious:

Just give us the name of the theater and one of us will confirm and report on why.

I think there’s some sort of industry sanctions they could catch for that, though, like losing their deal with distributors or something. And practically speaking, the reason that it isn’t enforced by law is that the industry is doing a pretty good job of self-policing: If too many theaters defied that, you probably would start to see some relevant laws, and probably more draconian than what we have.

This is at the ticket counter where they were asking for ID? I can think of two obvious reasons:

  • paying with a credit card, technically the cashier is supposed to match the ID to the card.
  • student pricing, which is common at theaters. Requires student IDs for every ticket in order to get the discount.

Are you sure it wasn’t either of these reasons?

I think, at least these days, any such laws would be struck down in court, much like laws regarding “selling violent video games to minors” always wind up being struck down.

I’m sure. As I said in post 5:

She was asking everyone and she needed to see IDs for all the tickets, not just for the guy purchasing.

Now that you mention it, that sounds plausible… I’ve been on movie expeditions with fellow students where one person got everyone’s tickets in advance, and that person always had to collect student IDs from everyone before going off to buy them.

Student discounts for movies? I’ve never seen that before. Some theaters will have cheaper prices for showings before a certain time, but the only discounts I’ve ever seen related to age were for children or seniors.

Student discounts aren’t related to age, but to whether the person is a student. And I’ve never seen a theater without student discounts.

Then they don’t do that here in New York.

Ok, you have been asked several times directly to either contact them yourself or let us do so by giving us the theater name. Why have you done neither?

Betcha they do. The trick is you have to ask. They don’t publicly post/advertise the student discount, but if you ask 9 times out of 10 they will give it to you if you have a student ID. (sometimes there are restrictions though: like they may not give it on Fri/Sat nights)

Because I don’t owe you jack-shit.

Because I have no interest in whether you believe me or not.

Because I would not allow a close friend to question my truthfulness; I will certainly not entertain a stranger “confirming” anything I say.

In short, because as far as I am concerned, your opinion means nothing.

If I return to the theater, I will ask them, and because others here have not been obnoxious I will likely report.

But from now on, I will not respond to anything *you *type.

Wow, defensive much? As a passive reader of the thread, it never seemed to me that anyone was doubting the validity of your statement, only trying to help you answer the question that you posted.

Having worked in 3 theaters in the same chain in my life, I can say they wouldn’t have carded anyone for a PG-13 movie. However, unsigned credit cards did get a ID check, and Student Discounts got an ID check. If someone came up, and asked for 3 student tickets, the cashier would have to see 3 student IDs to give the discounted price.

Er, dont’ think DrDeth was calling you a liar but merely asking why you haven’t found out from the cinema itself (or left details so someone else can find out).

Only time I showed any ID at a cinema was for the student deals they do, as proof of student status.

Exactly.

You asked why, no one has come up with a answer, thus now the ball is in your court. Many posters have tried to assist you with a possible answer.

Now we all want to know why that theater did that, and since none of us have been able to satisfactorily answer the question (… “Oh yeah, I was at a theater that did that on opening weekend once, it was because…”), the conclusion is to contact the theater. Rather than burden the OP with that responsibility, and to alleviate the rest of us from having to wait for the OP to get around to it, providing the name of the theater would allow another poster to get the information for him/herself and report back, possibly in a more expeditious manner now that it’s the 11th of May.

Dude, it’s three days later, tell us what was up already!

My gander is that it was to eliminate scalping, though I’ve never heard of scalping movie tickets before.

Well, the OP’s location field says “Southern Pennsylvania”. I’m sure there are no more than what, a couple hundred theaters in Southern PA? Calling each wouldn’t take more than a minute, so I’m sure someone could knock it out a lot faster than the answer would ever come if we waited for the OP. :stuck_out_tongue:
