> Actually, IIRC, US tanks were used in the Korean War in a similar fashion. That’s the last time I can recall tanks being used for indirect fire. They really aren’t suited to this role, and modern MBT are even less suited to it.

A late friend of mine was in a (Canadian) tank battalion in the Korean War. He mentioned that for quite a bit of the war they had dug into a hillside so only the turret was exposed. The ground was shale so they set off shaped charges to shatter it and make it (relatively) easier to dig out. They sat on a hilltop just behind the ridge and faced off against the North Koreans and Chinese across the valley. However, in their case these were fully functional tanks.

(He had plenty of other interesting stories about the Korean War.)

> Russians/Soviets have always been big on autoloaders. There tanks are tiny compared to a M1. Having one less crewman was important to them. I have no idea what that means to loading it in an emergency. Nothing good I’m sure.

The commander serves as the backup loader.

Several times (WW2) fixed fortifications would indeed incorporate tank turrets as ad hoc pillboxes. Typically for direct fire.
