Directors with 2 great full length movies in one year

Having read the thread, I think making Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein is probably the top achievement. Comedy is almost impossible and those are two of the best of all time.

It’s either that or Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List.

Kudos to Mel Brooks and Spielberg for pulling off the almost impossible.

Not as far as I can tell. Of those four, Popeye is the only one I even recognize, and “interesting” is probably the kindest thing that can be said about that film. The others (Quintent and A Perfect Couple in '79, and HealtH in '80) appear to have gotten mixed reviews, at best, and seem to have faded into obscurity.

I know this fights the OP’s conditions a bit … but Altman had three solid releases within 16 months in 1974-75:

Thieves Like Us - February 1974
California Split - August 1974
Nashville - June 1975

Now, Nashville’s status as a great movie is pretty comfortable. Altman’s two 1974 movies were both critically acclaimed, but did not score any major nominations (excepting California Split receiving a Writer’s Guild of America nomination for Best Comedy Written for the Screen).
