Disc World series. What order should I buy them in?

:smack: His Educated Rodents, not Flying.

I’ve read these childrens’ books, and I must say I enjoyed them a lot. The Johnny series are great, as well as the Bromeliad trilogy (“Truckers”, “Diggers”, “Wings”). I have to recommend them to anyone that has read the Discworld series and are keen on reading more Pratchett.

I just hadn’t realised that WFM was intended to be a childrens’ book. By the way, I bought ** Maurice ** at the same time I bought ** WFM**, so I had no idea that he had used the Discworld as a background for childrens’ books before.

Now I can appreciate ** WFM** for what it was meant to be, instead of judging it harshly for not being what I expected.

Eric, like The Last Hero, was produced as an illustrated story - so, the text is necessarily slighter than that of an ordinary novel in the series. (Of course, it’s not going to appeal if you don’t like Josh Kirby’s illustrations, either … )

Me? I started with the early ones (some time ago, now). Never did me any harm … the middle ones, though (when he’d hit his stride as a writer, but before the series got so crowded with recurring characters) are probably the best to start with now.

Course the paperback version in the US has no illustrations, is only a hundred and something pages, and costs $6.99. That massive ripoff colored my view.

BTW, the Canadian editions have the cool UK covers. Too bad they are priced rather more expensive than the US ones, even after conversion.

Well, he would - Dewey Decimal is used almost exclusively for non-fiction.

Oh, sure, spoil my gag whydon’cha.

In short…they’re ALL GOOD…buy em all… he’s still the funniest mind in literature. I would love to get him, Robin Williams, Eddie Izzard and myself together over dinner.

My fave quote from “Mort”

"The thing between Death’s triumphant digits was a fly from the dawn of time. It was the fly in the primordial soup. It had bred on mammoth turds. It wasn’t a fly that bangs on window panes, it was a fly that drills through walls.

No No No!!,

Don’t start in the middle, the very very best books - and the best ones to start with - are

Wyrd Sisters - the second in the Witches series

Mort - the first of the Death series

Guards! Guards! - the first in the City Watch series

Small Gods - not in a series, the most profound I think

Not being at the beginning, those books would appear to be the middle.
