> We have removed all the actually removable stuff and done other childproofing things, like put latches on cupboards, etc. His biggest temptation is the computer tower. We live in a very small house and the only place we can put the computer is in the living room. The tower is raised off the floor, but he can still reach it (there really isn’t a remedy for this in the near future). I’ve covered the main power button up with a piece of paper, which seems to keep my little button fanatic sufficiently distracted. It’s the cords in the back that fascinate him. That, and he likes to get the cd out of the cd drive.

I don’t have anything to offer discipline-wise (our philosophy is generally in line with dangermom and Chotii) but on the childproofing end of things that computer sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. One of these days he’s going to be strong enough to do something to it you hadn’t thought of.

> We wound up putting a fence around the whole area. Our computer desk is in a corner, and we put two wooden child gates (the kind you put across the top of the stairs) together perpendicularly and sort of lashed them in place with plastic zip-ties.

Zip-ties are great.

Our place is tiny so what we did was get [a play zone](http://www.onestepahead.com/product/27214/187755/117.html) plus a couple of extra sections, a [puzzle mat](http://www.onestepahead.com/jump.jsp?lGen=detail&itemID=149764&itemType=PRODUCT&iProductID=149764&change=117), a bag of big zip ties and set up a play area for the girls. Some of the playzone pieces I connected as they should be and others I zip-tied to pieces of furniture that could act as a barrier, thus extending the playzone. We also left the play area open at the point where the girls can come into our sitting area (couch, easy chair, ottoman) so they’re not cut off from us. That was crucial in making it work, and it works splendidly. Our place is just too small to hide everything they can get their hands on, so we have to use the barrier method. The only drawback is someone has to man the sitting area.

Everything within their reach got zip-tied to something relatively immovable. Cables got zip-tied to the back leg of the TV stand, the TV and stand got zip tied to the stair railing, etc. Computer-wise we have a laptop and don’t use it unless the girls are in their high chairs or are asleep.

I’m not going to repeat the good advice you’ve already gotten—I, too, find my discipline techniques in line with dangermom, etc. I would add one thing, though, about the time outs: when your child IS old enough to appreciate and follow what a real time out is all about, I would caution you against using his crib. Sources (no, I don’t have a cite handy, although I could find one if pressed) say that kids can make negative associations with their time-out place, so a child who is given a time out in his crib may begin resisting getting into the crib for naps or bed because he sees it as a place of punishment.
