There’s got to be some confusion here. Who would have introduced such an amendment? I can’t imagine anyone taking the position that Israel _should_ be able to keep killing Palestinians, but _shouldn’t_ be able to protect their own citizens.

The bill was the defense appropriations bill, so it was a bill to authorize funding.

AOC voted against an amendment to strip iron dome funding specifically from the bill. She also voted against the final bill.

I believe she always votes against the defense appropriations bill.

I believe the amendment had almost zero support and the final bill passed overwhelmingly (as it always does).

And yes it was a stupid amendment. It was proposed by Marjorie Taylor Greene who has no compunction about supporting killing Palestinians while cutting funding to protect Israelis, likely both because she is happy to do stupid shit like this that only plays well in a 10 second tiktok clip and because she hates both Jews and Arabs.

Gotcha. I thought “Who would introduce such an amendment?” was a rhetorical question, but _of course_ it would be MTG.

Which is why it was pretty wild to me that on CNN of all places they asked Bernie, “but MTG calls it a genocide!”.

So does Nick Fuentes. What point does that make? MTG also accuses Jews of controlling the weather, clearly she isn’t exactly an authority on this topic.

Wait, hold up, I just reread this and it fully sank in.

So she actually _did_ vote to “cut funding” in that she voted against the appropriations bill as a whole?

All the rage against her is set off over _an MTG troll bill_?

That’s even sillier than I realized.

> AOC didn’t want to cut _Iron Dome_ funding because she didn’t think having more dead Israeli civilians is going to make Israel more receptive to end the fighting.

…I happen to think that both Israeli citizens and Palestinian civilians are important, and I’d like to have less dead Palestinian civilians. I think the IDF are committing atrocities in Gaza every single day, and I’d like them to stop.

So I’d support cutting military funding across the board. Because I think you are missing the point here. That Israel are starving the Palestinian people. As in Netanyahu literally has an arrest warrant out for him for _the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare_.

There isn’t any doubt what is happening here. If any other country were doing this, then absolutely halting military funding across the board would be an option on the table. Because Israel isn’t only blocking food: it’s blocking medical supplies. Tents. Shelter. Fuel. Baby food.

These are war crimes, Babale. Israel are killing hundreds of Palestinian children every single week. They are bombing them. Starving them. Literally shooting some of them deliberately in the testicles. The IDF killed poor Hind Rajab while she was surrounded by her dead family. The IDF killed the paramedics trying to rescue her. And in a recurring theme, a few months ago the IDF murdered 15 paramedics and tried to cover it up.

The IDF have killed well over a thousand Palestinians over the last few months just for trying to get food. They’ve banned Palestinians from fishing. From _swimming_. They’ve razed the farms. Destroyed the healthcare system.

Israel are holding tens of thousands of prisoners in what humanitarian agencies call [torture camps](https://www.amnesty.org.uk/press-releases/israel-palestinians-gaza-held-secret-detention-describe-torture-new-testimonies). They don’t have access to the International Red Cross and are held in conditions outside of the parameters of the Geneva Conventions and International Humanitarian Law.

If any other country were responsible for these well documented atrocities, not only would we cut their military funding, the international community would probably be preparing to go to war. But Israel gets a pass. In the last year, they’ve launched attacks on four neighbouring countries, killed 159 Palestinians in the West Bank so far this year. Destroyed Gaza and herded Palestinians living in Gaza into less than 10% of the land.

So I think cutting military funding is the very least we should be doing considering the _scale_ of the atrocities, the fact that Israel are showing no signs of letting up, are showing every intention of _ethnic cleansing_ Gaza, and we should be doing everything we can to _prevent that_.

A reminder that this is where we are at:

> The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), of which WHO is a member, today issued a Food Insecurity and Malnutrition Alert for the Gaza Strip.

There is no doubt. Famine is here. And it wasn’t caused by a natural disaster. It’s entirely manmade. A deliberate, calculated decision that could be ended right now if the Israeli regime decided to.

We shouldn’t be funding this. And it’s perfectly fine to criticise those that do.

No this is NOT literally the only criticism of Bernie, and it isn’t just about the use of a “magic word.”

Here is Mehdi Hasan who fairly sums up my position. Its about letting people speak their truth and not just dismissing it.

Are you also not worried about the quite frankly unhinged attacks I see all the time from some pro-Israel supporters, and the political violence they might be responsible for? Poor 6-year old Wadee Alfayoumi, stabbed to death by Joseph Czuba. The three Palestinian students shot in November 2023 in Burlington. The Israeli tourist who was shot at multiple times because he was mistaken for a Palestinian man. The countless stories of Palestinians and Muslims being attacked, headscarves being ripped off, losing their jobs, being publicly doxxed and in most case the perpetrator facing _zero_ repercussions.

This isn’t a problem with the movement. This is a problem with _unhinged people_. On all sides. Just because I have a difference of opinion with Bernie and AOC doesn’t mean I’m responsible or even support graffiti attacks. We should be _allowed_ to criticise politicians, even those who are on our side, without having to worry about being lumped in with “unhinged elements” advocating for or committing political violence.

I condemn and have condemned any of that kind of political violence.

In this case I wasn’t really commenting on the simple fact that unhinged lunatics are attacking AOC, but about the direction from which the attack came. It’s not like Pro-Israel supporters are going around violently targeting Richie Torres for not being pro-Israel enough.

The thing they aren’t doing is finding other Israel supporters who they are in lockstep on 90% of the issue and sending them death threats.

Bernie just forced a senate vote on cutting all funding to Israel. Dem leadership is probably pissed at him because this topic is much more of a wedge issue for democrats than republicans at a time when they want to keep the focus on Epstein. I still think he did the right thing because I do think Israel is committing horrific war crimes and now is the time to get legislators on record about it. I don’t understand how anyone with a passing relationship with US politics wouldn’t think he’s supporting Palestinians

Personally, I don’t understand how anyone with a passing relationship with US politics can’t see that the Democrats (as in the party, not supporters) , and Biden in particular, have almost universally backed Israel in what they are doing to the Palestinians in Gaza AND the West Bank, and would no longer have faith in the process.

> Yes, I am sure that if Richie Torres was having his office ransacked by Pro Israel protestors

Firstly: there is a qualitative difference between “death threats” and “ransacking offices.” Neither are acceptable.

But I was only talking about the _first_. So are you sure Richie Torres isn’t getting death threats, and if he is, do you know what the source is?

“Are you sure” is a perfectly valid question here.

Secondly: nobody has been caught yet. _Anyone_ could have vandalised the office, including people wanting to make the protest movement look bad.

Thirdly: can we stop doing this, please? People are tired of having to “condemn Hamas” every time they criticise Israel. We shouldn’t be put in the position of having to condemn every single action taken by other people, even of those people agree with me.

So if some idiots are vandalising AOC’s office, or if some unhinged people are sending her death threats: thats a reflection on those idiots and those unhinged people, not on people that are critical of AOC’s position.

You cannot _conflate the two_. It’s a _silencing_ tactic. I condemn Hamas. I condemn the people who vandalised the office, I condemn people sending death threats to AOC, to Richie Torres. I shouldn’t have to address that any more. It has nothing to do with anything I’ve said.
