Discussion thread for the Hamas Attacks Israel thread, October 2023

What if this was coordinated by other nations and the Hamas rocket attacks were designed to drain Israeli intercept weapons so that larger/deadlier weapons can rain down on them.

Iron Dome is specifically designed for short ranged Gazan rockets. Larger/deadlier weapons would be intercepted by Patriot missiles.

Israel fired off a Patriot missile due to a false alarm earlier today. So they’re clearly on high alert to use those if needed.

The news is saying they breached the security wall in 29 places. The automated systems did not work.

If 29 got through of 5000, that’s a 99.42% success rate.

I’d certainly rather be under the Dome than not.

The fence was breached by terrorists on foot in 29 places (and many came through at each breach). A lot more than 29 rockets got through.

CNN is showing a picture of a bullet ridden babies body today. They said there’s more pictures they didn’t show.

I just can’t line that up in my head. I can’t see how anyone could do that. I know babies have been shot and killed in all wars. Equally as terrible.
This just has a sense of more brutality.
These people were in kibbutz farms. Leading what looks like very peaceful country lives. Raising families and food.

It’s a new Holocaust. For no end purpose that I can see/understand.

If anything good can come of this, maybe some Americans will finally get over their border wall fetish.

They aren’t going to do this long enough to kill huge numbers of people.

Gaza does have a border with Egypt over which Israel has no control. Egypt could provide Gaza with food and water and medicine. They choose not to. The different between Egypt and Israel is that Israel usually DOES provide them with those things, and now that they’re literally at war with Hamas, everyone is complaining that they won’t provide Hamas with free electricity and supplies.

I appreciate that Israel is not blameless in all this, but this isn’t the West Bank, where Israel is running a very cynical game in slowly eating up all the land with “Settlers” and have deliberately made it geographically impossible to create a cohesive Palestinian state. Israel didn’t occupy Gaza, and forced Jewish settlers out at the point of a gun. They provided Gaza with stuff.

I once felt bad for a week when I hit a squirrel with my car. How a person could murder another human being is just completely beyond my comprehension.

How long are they going to do it?

Yeah, I saw that on CNN too. Heartbreaking. How can any human being be so cruel towards a baby, fercryingoutloud?

I’d hate to be the person who decides what to show and what not to show. Imagine what they’ve seen that they decided not to show.

The longer the war continues the better for Hamas.

This was a heated discussion at the Israeli government yesterday. These sorts of pictures are generally not released out of respect for the dead but considering all of the misinformation out there the decision was made to release the photos this time.

They decided not to show the babies that were burned.

Isn’t Egypt part of the blockade of Gaza with Israel (prior to current hostilities)?

This whole thing sucks for everyone. I am trying to keep Hamas separate from ordinary Palestinians. I emphasize with Israeli rage. I don’t know what’s right any more with this.

There are quite a few protests that seem to have turned ugly. I see a lot of talk online about a potential global wave of terrorist attacks planned by Hamas. Hopefully this is just talk.

Yes, following Hamas taking over. The Hamas takeover resulted in Israel, Egypt, the USA, and the UN demanding Hamas recognize the Oslo accords and give up violence or else they’d refuse to deal with them. Hamas wouldn’t do that, so here we are, and Israel’s move to leave Gaza in the hopes of peace was a failure.

The fact Egypt also blockades Gaza should tell the Jew-haters something, I guess, but then, it’s about hatred.

Of course, the ongoing blockade, while it was a response to Hamas, just hardens the situation. It clearly isn’t getting better. But would it get better without the blockade?

To be clear, that has been true for many years. In the immediate situation, however, Israel is bombing the border crossing and not allowing any relief workers or supplies to enter.

They’re bombing the Egyptian border? I like to see something that shows that.

NM I see it on Reuters.

Welp, this is MPersonalSISMS, so I guess I can share this. I mentioned above that my neighbor’s cousin is missing from the Nova music festival. His kid babysits for my kid and has talked about how much he loves visiting his cousins in Israel.

I’ll spoil this in case you don’t need these kind of mental images right now.

He was with a group of 25-30 kids who ran from the festival and found some sort of bomb shelter to hide in. Hamas threw grenades into the shelter. The first two grenades were caught and thrown back, and hopefully they found their targets. My neighbor’s cousin caught the third one and didn’t throw it back in time. It must have been a low budget grenade because he only lost his hand, and proceeded to do what any of us would do under such circumstances, which is calmly apply a tourniquet to his spurting stump. Honestly, Israelis are kinda superheroes. Subsequently they were all captured and taken into Gaza. Given the current state of medical care in Gaza…well, the family is asking everyone not to give up hope.

Anyway, the family is trying to get his story as widely known as possible, so I’m OK with sharing that his name is Hersh Goldberg, and your non-ironic thoughts and prayers on his behalf are appreciated.

Sorry for you and his family. I’ll send up my good thoughts for him.

How horrible to be so injured and no help coming.
