In case anyone is wondering what all of those people have in common is they are known as people who are “famous for being famous.” Originally the poll included Zsa Zsa Gabor, but after 20 minutes of internet research, I still couldn’t nail down a solid reason why she became famous. She was runner-up of the 1933 Miss Hungary pageant but that didn’t seem like it. Possibly it was carry-over fame from her sisters, but that didn’t feel that solid either. So I deleted her from the poll.

I’m not sure Joyce Brothers fits in to that group. I think of her as [formally] famous for her work.

I voted this way too. With critical acclaim, I can probable get backing and I will feel good about what I did.

I know of Slack because I have used similar tools. I do prefer to ignore immediate notices when possible, but they have saved my butt so can’t really complain. Using this type of messaging for me goes all the way back to the 80s and using PROFS, and another in-system messaging tool at a newspaper. They can be very handy.

Most of the time we had a baby shower for a coworker, it was held during lunch in the breakroom. We always invited the guys, and most of them attended. Hey, free cake!

Oh, and we didn’t play any of those super lame-o games.

On edit: this was well over 30 years ago.

I always give at least one book at baby showers…usually with a stack of onesies that one never has enough of. It’s fun to share your favs.

I thought her sister (Eva…didn’t know there was more than one) became famous _after_ Zsa Zsa. After all Zsa Zsa is the star of the classic movie _The Queen of Outer Space_ in 1958.

Parenthetically, Zsa Zsa is a nickame for Susan. My middle name is Suzanne, and my mom sometimes called me Zsuzsika.

I had forgotten that PROFS even existed. I worked as an office temp during college and one year I ended up in a new organization where the manager had come in from some place that didn’t have email. This was 1991, or so. I had to teach him how to use the system.

I’ve heard of Slack, as many of our contractors use it, and then make comparison with our instance of Teams.

I do make use of Teams ‘Do Not Disturb’ function as necessary, or when I want to avoid someone.

For a second child, a baby shower can be quite useful as well, especially if there are a few years (5 or more) between children. Some of the plastic stuff gets brittle with age, plus it seems there’s always new stuff coming out.

In Switzerland, it is considered unlucky to wish someone a happy birthday before the actual day. For a similar reason, baby showers are rare here. As soon as the baby is born, there is an announcement, and then the friends and coworkers will buy gifts, etc.

My astronomy club started using Slack last year for communications. I like it better than the cumbersome email list used before, but many members still cling to that.

To answer the movie director question, I reluctantly chose, “Box office success that everyone hates.” The reason being that Hollywood management, like any capitalist management, ultimately cares most about the bottom line, and if I keep making exquisite high-quality movies that are a financial flop, sooner or later my bosses are going to confront me, “Velocity, if we keep giving you movies to direct you’re going to drive us into bankruptcy” and then fire me.

By contrast, I have never heard of a movie director being fired for making too many stupid movies that keep raking in big $$$ for the studio. That could never happen.

I used Slack to chat with friends when we were all at a convention together. (hey, anyone else want to do Chinese for lunch?) and some similar minor stuff. I now mostly use Discord for that. In between, i think we were using a Google chat. I use Teams at work, for stuff my husband uses Slack for.

Interesting. We just do “group texts” I have “teams” on my phone, but I don’t like using it.

</div>

I’ve never used Teams on my phone. I only use it for work.

The advantage of using Slack or a Google chat or Discord is that instead of one person setting it up, it’s opt-in. So i can post a link to the group chat in a place where my friend congregate, or to an email list, and those people who are, for instance, going to the convention and wanting to organize stuff can choose to join the chat.

I found that question impossible to answer without some context: Are we assuming I’m already a (critically and/or financially) successful moviemaker? Are we talking about my first movie in what I hope will be a long and successful career? Or am I making the one movie I will ever make, before going on with the rest of my life?

That’s what I thought too. I take the successful but critically despised movie, collect the big bucks, quit, and go fishing.

I never heard of Slack, and never saw a news item about it. After reading the comments in this thread I still don’t know what it is. 🙂

Close the bathroom door? Hell, I lock it. If I had a piano in the bathroom I’d move it to further block the door. I was the same way when I lived by myself.

I seem to have more “others”.

I don’t close the bathroom door if nobody’s around but the cats. I probably wouldn’t close it for a spouse or for my own small child if I had either or both, and might not for a close friend, especially if they weren’t likely to be in direct line of sight and/or based on whether I thought they cared. I’m pretty sure my family members (who I don’t live with) expect the door to be closed if they/I are visiting, so I do that. I do close it if anybody else is around.

If I am doing something financial online, I log out when done. But mostly I avoid doing financial things online.

If I were a successful actor who could choose my roles, I’d choose roles that interested me, and that I thought were well written. They wouldn’t have to be in arty or indie films, though they might be; but whether the film was “artsy” or “prestige” wouldn’t be the deciding issue. A boilerplate western or whatever in which I liked the particular role would be OK.

Exactly. It’s one thing if you just live with a spouse/SO. It’s something else if you have kids (especially older, opposite-sex kids), in-laws, etc.

I voted to “Close the damn door” even though I don’t at home. It’s just me and the cats, now and the cats need to supervise. With family, or even with just the ex around, I would close the door.
