We have some Indian recipes that call for a tablespoon or two of tomato paste. It makes a huge difference in the flavor of the sauce, but it doesn’t take much. ---

We had a false spring here in New Mexico in early March, as is traditional. I think Mother Nature gets a sick thrill out of fooling all those non-native fruit trees into blooming just before a freeze. The difference this year is that we’ve gone into a weeks-long stretch of serious winter weather. I think this has confused the birds - we have some songbirds that have flown in from the south, but the majority of our crows haven’t left yet. I think we’re having a bird housing crisis that mirrors the human one right now. ---

At the moment the morning bird song seems a bit light, but it has intensified over the last week - I think one of the types of migrating birds arrived, and they are **loud**. Two years ago there were neighbor cats attacking the birds in our back garden, so we had far fewer birds there. The cats are gone (no idea why) and so we have more birds there. I am also not at home during the day as my manager canceled home office, so I only get to experience the birds in the morning and evening, which is when they tend to be more active. ---
