To me, “I’m coming down” means something entirely different from “I’m coming down with something.” The latter means that one’s getting sick. The former means that one’s been high or tripping, and the effects are wearing off. There’s no way I’d say one as a substitute for the other. ---

Ditto. “I’m coming down” either refers to moving in space (I’m coming down stairs) or to coming down off a psychoactive substance. (I was high, and now I’m less high.) It would never occur to me that it could be related to a disease. ---

If “limited-access highway” means things like paid HOV lanes, then they are generally treated like race tracks around here. The police treat it like unwritten rules in baseball: they don’t really care that much unless you show them up, like you pass them. ---

Sigh. No, just highways with no stop signs or traffic lights, else people would have nitpicked me about whether the controlled kind would have counted or not. Indicate just “interstates” and now I’d be sure to get people asking why non-interstate limited-access highways were not included. I simply can’t win for losing here. ---

Here’s the backstory for why I posted the poll: I had a friend who would say “I’m coming down” when she was feeling ill and I always thought that was odd because my understanding of the phrase was the same as yours. I was curious whether that was a commonly used phrase that I just wasn’t aware of or if it was just her little quirk. ---

Re: the genie poll. I read _The Djinn in the Nightengale’s Eye_ (A.S. Byatt) recently. It’s a collection of stories, but the titular story is more a novella and half the length of the book. Anyway, the woman who releases the djinn asks to have her looks/body the way they were when she was in her 30s. She didn’t want her 20s appearance, and she was definitely unhappy with her 60ish looks. I thought that sounded great ---

I’m sorry, but no vampire, werewolf, or class-5 free roaming vapor will get my vote. I’m afraid the first two’s policies may actually be ruses to facilitate eating people more easily, and I’ve never seen a class-5 free roaming vapor that was capable of a more complicated thought than, “food now.” Zombies are also brain dead. Mummies are notoriously evil. That leaves the Frankenstein’s Monster. He was intelligent, well spoken, and could be trusted to keep with a plan. Okay, so that plan usually involves killing his creator, but one he saw a shrink about his well-earned daddy issues, I’m sure he’d be a good leader.
